MK6 Wheel / Rim / Tyre Thread

Hi all,

I've searched and there are plenty of threads on wheel offsets for different cars, but all specific to a particular wheel.
Happy to have this thread as a general "Golf R - wheel fitment" thread.

First up, I'm looking for some help.
I have some S3 wheels that I had on my old GTI.
I want to fit them to my R. I have a CW 3 door R with black 19" Talladegas.


GTI was on HPA SHS. Love how low it was (for looks, not the ride!)

S3 specs are 7.5J x 18H2 ET56



I have read that my 19" talla's are 8J x 19 ET50



Can anyone suggest whether I'll have any issues running these wheels?
Caliper rubbing?

Any help would be appreciated!

S3 wheels are fitted!
Don't look anywhere as good as they did on the GTI... Offset is wrong, they look too far into the arches.



I was previously correctly advised that I wouldn't have any issues with caliper clearance with these wheels. No issues there.

Golf R runs same brake setup as S3,so should be no problem with fitment.
I'm running 18 x 8 rims with 45 offset on my S3.

However I seem to have a problem with slight rubbing on the inside of the front wheels when they are on a tight lock (approx three quarters lock to full lock). Seems to be against the struts / shocks, as I can't get my finger between the back of the tyre and the shock strut. I have DCC if this makes any odds.

At low speed this doesn't seem to be an issue, but I'm wondering if I will have futher issues at speed.

Any thoughts?

I picked up my GTD just over a week ago. Today I checked the cold pressures to find 38psi in the fronts but 43psi in the rears. Seems a bit excessive for rears, certainly well above the suggested pressures on the tyre placard. I also noted as I let them down to match the fronts the vented air was very sweet smelling.

My whole life I've been a michellin and Bridgestone Fan.
dont want anything made by Dunlop, and didnt really like the Conti CS2.
BUT, the GTI has me hating the re050's
great tyre.. until you go to rotate them. Seems that they suffer a bit of heel & Toe wear pattern on the rear axle of teh golf. The noise when rotated to the front is horrendous. So much so I thought I had buckled my rims. Called up my trusty tyre and alignment dude, and once he asked me what car it was.. he told me it wasnt worth booking in for a balance.. knew the problem and described it to a tee...
sounds like its a balance issue, but there is NO vibration from teh steering wheel. sounds like a wheel bearing issue. Effects lower profile tyres, and some treads are more subject to it than others

Running the hand over teh tyre you definitely feel a wear pattern that isnt flat.. and spirited driving has seen chinks of teh tread ripped off.
Definitely not impressed.

So.. for you guys out there.. rotate every 5,000Km or dont do it at all...


It is so loud and annoying that I was contemplating buying new tyres...but, now.. cant wait for the new car to arrive as I wont be shelling out $1K in tyres for the next owner to enjoy...

I've just done 25,000 in my GTI with the RE-050s and they were starting to get a rhythmic whir like a bearing had gone. Have had a wheel alignment done (it was out a bit) and that seems to have eased the noise a bit. I do a lot of highway driving so don't know if that makes it worse.

I had exactly this problem with the Bridgestones on my previous ride - Honda Euro. It sounded like I had out-of-round off-road tyres when driving on smooth bitumen. There was no vibration or shudder in the steering, but the noise made people turn and look.

I ended up replacing them for Pirellis with still a good 15,000 left on the tyres. The difference in noise was stunning. The tyre shop suggested it would prevent the whir if I got an alignment every 15,000.... which is less than six months for me.

Dunlops r notorious for road noise, running the sport maxx gt and can confirm they r loud. Will look at yoko s drive next

which tyre to choose for MK6 GTI

Hi All,
Well my stock fit RE-050 have given up and need to be replaced road noise is driving me nuts. the local tyre dealer has given me pricing on the following

Michelin PS3 $253.00
Pirelli P7 $230.00
Pirelli P Zero Rosso $264.00

I am looking for grip and lower levels of road noise compared to the RE-050 which has had noise from day one. Most driving is on the freeway with occasional spirited driving on some of the twisty back mountain roads.

Any help and suggestions greatly appreciated. Help me with your recommendations of the above 3 tyres.

Here's one of my OEM Dunlop Sport Maxx GT's after 17k of daily driving with 1000kms of Sandown on 4 separate days in there so I reckon they did pretty well...

Anyway I've gotta order a set of tyres ASAP but finding a set of suitable replacements for the R a right pain in the rear end! Manufacturer requirements are 235/35R19 91Y but those last 3 characters are the painful bit and OEM Dunlop's aren't listed anymore.

Of the tyres that I know will hold up on the track as well as the street..
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 - meet spec but tirerack no stock (guessing they're EOL)
Hankook Ventus R-S3 - 87W
Yokohama ADVAN AD08 - 87W
Bridgestone RE-11 - was about to order these but they're 91W

Pretty sure vicroads info says you have to match or exceed the speed rating so even the 91W's are out? Seems like the tyre rating on these cars is way over specified.

I know there are S04, some yoko s-drive etc that are 91Y, but I have zero feedback on them as far as track work goes so I'm not taking a $1500 punt!

i think the load rating is more important, and teh speed rating can be "variable"

from my discussions on this there is a minimum threshold you have to have as far as speed rating goes (cannot remember at this point in time), but you dont necessarily have to match or exceed speed rating. Call a local tyre specialist, they should know!

Doesn't matter what they say, Shannons made it very clear that the full rating had to be followed 100% and 235/35/R19 91Y it is!

usually they just specify that it has to be RWC.

Dave, I would suggest a phone call to shannons (you probably have already done so) pointing out what the requirements are for Vic RWC. I would then ask for further clarification of if the case is as you state, why a vehicle that maintains RWC will not be covered.

Dont mean to be a SA, but it could open up your tyre choice significantly.
Load rating, Howver, cannot be adjusted downwards

alternatively, what's teh placard on an R with 18" suggest as the load and speed rating???
