  • My wife has just had Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 fitted in 235/45r17 replacing Pirelli P Zero in 225/45r17. Initial feedback is that the larger size rides a little softer, and indeed fills out the guards a little more and offer more rim protection. Early days as far as testing grip levels but they seem to offer equal grip to the Pirelli's at the same stage, however I think that the Goodyear's offer a better ride. $220 each fitted is pretty good value for a performance tyre. Made in Europe too.

    • Hi guys, new here,

Anyone did a change from the stock 2010 118TSI Golf rims to 19's without modifications and just straight swap? What would be your recommendations? I'm just after a nice look, and I dont want to do any modfications, lowering, etc.. Would it work?

Can be done without modification - just depends if you'll be happy with the look without lowering. It will look quite "stilted" or "4wdish".

You may want to consider the 18s route instead, with the added bonus of cheaper wheels, tyres and more ride comfort.

Are your original rims 15" or 16"? Looks are subjective but IMO, 19" without lowering looks poorly proportioned.

I've run 16", 17" & 18" on my car with 5 different tyre sizes. If the car isn't lowered then I'd go with a lightweight (<7kg) 17x7.5 ET40 with 235/45r17 sticky tyres. The reduced offset will bring the tyre closer to the guard edge and the slightly bigger diameter will help fill the guard.

Keep in mind that the bigger rim you get, the heavier it is and the car will accelerate slower and use more fuel.

Another point. If I had a 118tsi I'd be saving my money for an engine rebuild or (assuming DSG) gearbox rebuild. It's not a car I'd be investing a lot of extra money in.

            I have the 16".. with the 205/55 r16 Pirelli's on it.

and yes I have the 2010 118TSI DSG, with 97kms on it.. With all the DSG and engine cylinder failures Ive read about here recently, looks like it makes really good sense to save money for the eventual catastrophe. I just hope my first car, EVER (purchased by me), would last a bit longer than that.. But I'm doing everything I can to avoid it.. I plan to have the DSG serviced in the next upcoming service and hope to prevent anything major.. I'm also hoping that my engine will not lose power in any cylinders.

Ride is pretty good, and shifting is smooth.. hopefully it stays that way for the time I own it..

However, I want to make it look better thats why Im going for the rims, without any modifications. I aint got a lot of money but I want to somehow enjoy it.

Thank you for that recommendation, I think 17's would be a good option as I dont want to lose the comfortable ride it already has. (I drove a few of my dad's toyotas and subarus growing up, and this is my first euro)..

If you look on FB marketplace, ebay or Gumtree you should be able to get some unmarked 17" or 18" with near new tyres for $400-$500. That's what I've paid for my last 3 sets of rims/tyres.

Remember that Audi & Skoda wheels fit too.

I will check! I dont really plan on modifying the springs/suspension. I just want the look, and to make it easier to re-sell or trade-in when Im ready for the GTI, financial-wise. LOL

I was told by my friend to get the RS6 rims or the Talladega rims.. they look very similar.. You think that would fit and would look nice without lowering?

Believe it or not - totally stock will be best for trade-in or re-sale. If you change it then fit what will give you pleasure during your ownership period.

I'd have to know the specs of the rims (width, diameter, offset, centrebore diameter, PCD, etc) before saying what will fit. Many of the later Audi rims have too much offset and the tyres are too big in diameter.

Buy what makes you happy - don't listen to your mates too much.

Yes, I understand, thats why I dont want to modify the springs or lowering. I just want the look and a direct swap from the stock 16's, so I can revert back to the stock I have on now when it comes to sell or trade-in..

the previous owner put new Pirelli P7, 205/55 R16 on it.

Here are the specs of the Talladega rims I found on the net.. Its the Rims that comes with the Golf R.

                      • Hey guys, what would be the good tyres for MK6 GTI at a cheaper price. I’ve currently got Pirelli P Zero MO 225/40 R18 92Y and have been quite happy with the performance but wanted something a bit cheaper.

Tyroola quotes $860 for 4 tyres plus fitting and wheel alignment which seems ok but local tyre shops are telling me they are not genuine/parallel imports etc and I should avoid them. The local guys quote me $255 each including fitting and $69 for wheel alignment. I’m located in Melbourne. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Have you found the PZero’s to wear out prematurely on the outer edges? Its very common with the PZero’s.

Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 3 and Falken Azenis FK510 are good options. I had the Falkens on my previous car and have the Hankooks on my current car. Both tyres have rated very well overall on tyrereviews.com (he also does videos on Youtube testing tyres) and are better amongst the mid/premium tyres, bettered only by the top players Michelin Pilot Sport 4 & Continental.

Low noise, good grip and nice looking tyres.

                          • Not quite in the same league as the two options listed above, but still a perfectly decent tyre option is the Bridgestone Potenza RE003. Jax have $100 cashback deal on these for the month of February so they come down to $195 each after the cashback.

That’s spot on! I haven’t paid much attention to it as I don’t drive hard and wife has been driving it most of the time. I only noticed it today when I was checking them because of the bulge on sidewall of the front tyre. They sure do seem to wear quite a lot on the outer edges compared to how much tread depth is left.

I was also looking at Michellin Pilot - I think the car originally came with those when I bought it in 2011. I will definitely look into those two options as well. Thanks for the information Lucas_R.

They seem to not have 92Y but only 92W, not that it’d make much difference? Quite surprised that Hankook ones have same pricing as Pirelli.
