  • GTI engine or wrecker advice - Western Australia

    Hello,

My 2010 GTI has had a timing belt failure and damaged the cams. Spent $2K so far on diagnosis (taking engine apart) and they have said:

    - Top cover if repairable (another $300 to assess) will cost $9K to fix
    - But engine has corrosion from coolant spilling, and that will also cost up to about $9K (some parts duplicated from the top cover fix)

Or I could get a brand new engine for $16K plus labour, or a refurbed engine for I think it was $12K plus labour

I am thinking it is just sadly scrap value now, and wondering if anyone can give advice as to who might take the car for its parts in WA and what to expect value wise?

It is in pretty good condition (only 160 thousand KM) apart from the engine.

    Thanks for any advice.

Sorry to hear this has happened to your car. Without even looking at your car its pretty certain that your timing chain tensioner has failed (poor design) and this then allows the timing chain to be loose and it slips and then your valves will hit the pistons.

A family member had basically the same thing happen to his Mk6 GTI a few years ago. Ended up costing him approx $9k to get a reconditioned head + other parts like timing chain etc and all the labour etc.

The car is lucky to be worth $12k in this market (in perfect working order), so I definitely would not bother with a new engine for $16k, and would not even bother with the $9k quote to recondition the head. I would buy an engine from a wrecker (approx $3.0-3.5k) and have that fitted. You will probably spend about $7k to buy a wrecker engine and have that installed by a mechanic.

Thank you. I am looking at CCZB engines and whether it is worth shipping from eastern states (only one 2009 one in WA that will cost $5K to get taken to my car)

I cant imagine it would be too hard to find a GTI engine in Perth, but no doubt there would be more to choose from in Melbourne/Sydney etc.

Here is a GTI engine in Perth, but its very expensive (especially for a 2009 model engine which still has the crappy design timing chain tensionter) compared to similar engines on the east coast. VOLKSWAGEN GOLF ENGINE PETROL, 2.0, TURBO, GEN 6, CCZB CODE, GTi TYPE, 10/08-03/ | eBay
