Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Instrument cluster backlit dead

I have a 2010 Golf Gti MKVI and my backlight on my instrument cluster has been dead for over a year now. I've asked a mechanic and they said I'll need to replace the pcb which can cost up to $800.
Has anyone had this issue and know what options I might have in getting this fixed.

    Thank you.

S/Hand one from a wrecker. Ask for identical part number Quite a few on Ebay that sell that sort of stuff from Melbourne.

How can I find out the identical part number, just so I don't get sold the wrong part!
Would you know a rough price what I should be paying for a S/H cluster ?
Secondly is installation a tedious procedure or is this something I could do myself ?

      Cheers.

The cluster has the immobilizer in it, so you can't just swap it without the right tools.
The SMD LEDs are a couple of cents each and easy enough to replace on the board however.
I would imagine there would be a workshop that would do instrument cluster repairs somewhere in Melbourne?

I've been quoted by VW Essendon $1471 part, $435 call charge and $385 labour
Surely there's cheaper alternatives for a car that's over 10 years old??
