Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Golf MK6 manual clutch replacement

    Hi all,

    I have a 2012 MK6 118tsi in manual with roughly 55,000km. When the car is idling and in neutral I can hear a rattle/clunking noise, as soon as I press my foot on the clutch pedal the noise goes away. I have taken it to Volkswagen and they have told me the clutch needs to be replaced.

    I am after suggests from everyone for
    1) Alternatives to the stock clutch.
    2) Performance/tuning shops in the Sydney Metro or Newcastle area that people would recommend

    All assistance is appreciated.

    Sounds like either your dual mass flywheel is worn (they make a rattling noise once worn) and/or your throw out bearing is worn (although the bearing usually makes more of a whurring noise rather than a rattle).

    I had a MK6 GTI that needed the rear main seal replaced and the engine had done around 80,000kms at that stage. To replace the rear main seal the gearbox and clutch needs to be removed - the mechanic said my dual mass flywheel did have some signs of wear but was still ok.

    Not sure what causes the dual mass flywheel to wear - whether its simply time/distance travelled or whether how the car is driven (eg driven hard / stop start traffic etc) causes it to wear at different rates on different cars. For reference, my car was a Newcastle city driven car all its life, so no crazy traffic jams or anything.

      I replaced my clutch with an single mass "extreme hd" unit which was done by Newcastle gearbox and diff, or could be done by Pete at Newcastle VW. The single mass hd clutch is heavier at the pedal and has a narrower friction point which I prefer, especially at stage 2 tune. It brings more drivetrain vibration though...

        Here is what shortens the DMF life;
        launch starts, unnecessary quick take offs, laboring the engine - lazy (too late) gear changes, slipping the clutch. Gear selected when parked on incline with the hand brake not done properly. Excessive (too much) heat.

            Go see Pete at Newcastle VW Centre to talk about tuning options. He is on Lindus St, Wickham.

              Interesting information, thanks.

              I'm really surprised by my 2010 Golf GTI, owned since new, 108,000k's, still on original clutch!!
              And I am possibly one of the worst manual drivers on the road. Brought up on automatics (20+ Years) before going manual a few cars before my Golf. But I still drive and shift like crap. LOL, I KNOW I tend to ride the clutch at times, specially off idle, but it has given no signs of wanting to kick by butt yet.
