The 6sp auto in early MK5 is not as bad as 7sp DSG in golf 6. Put it simply, if someone is buying car that is more than 10 years old and must have an auto transmission, then the Aisin 6sp in MK5 Golf is not any different to other makes.
Of course the manual would be better in any secondhand car especially in +10year old ones.
Our MK5 auto has lasted longer than the manual MK4, which let go of the diff crownwheel, totaled 1st gear and cost close to $3000 to repair.
It is a bit slushy but I have more confidence in this to the DSG in my other MK5 Jetta.
My thoughts Auto>Manual>DSG
Which ever you buy ensure the trans fluid was changed at 60,000km, along with a full service history, this may show things that have already gone wrong with the car like PCV etc. Service history may show comments like excessive oil between services.
