Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • Today I replaced my worn window switches with new silver tipped versions, it's nerve wracking removing the door panels, but all done now and looks great

Any tips on removing the panels? I have to do mine once I source some new interior door pulls / handles.

Pain in the arse job imho, the window switches for all three passenger doors require removal of the door panels. make sure you have the right tools before you begin, magnetic headed tools are the best (which I didn't have.

I did a google search and found a couple of DIY's on both YouTube and VW forums, they were invaluable.

DIY - MKV Door Trim Removal

The tough one was the front passenger side, start with this door. Once you've done the front passenger side the rears are easy.

The drivers door is the easiest as you only have to remove the grab handle which pretty much just lifts up and off to access the window and mirror switches.

Remember to wind your windows down when you try to re-fit the tops of the door panels, you kind of have to angle them back on and have something like a milk crate to rest the semi-removed panel on as you don't have to remove the inner door release handle.

              I hope that helps bro.

              Alan.

Take your time. Some of the retaining clips are pretty easily broken. I just helped my brother with an entire Mk4 Golf interior swap. Door cards were the last thing we tackled. I would recommend a second set of hands to hold the door card as you are unclipping/clipping the cables for the mirrors/window switches. It is much easier to position with some help.

We used a set of plastic interior trim panel tools and a T20 Torx head ratchet and a phillips head screw driver.
