Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

In the Golf range the 125kw TDI costs $5,000 more than the 103kw TDI Pacific and comes with 17" rims and sports suspension.

So unless there's some other difference between the GT and the Pacific models that's $2,500 VGA is charging for sports suspension . . . how do you feel about VGA pricing now?

Too bad VGA doesn't make the 125kw engine an option in the Golf Pacific as it does in the Passat range. But why would it when it can cream $5,000 for a bunch of add-ons worth far less?

The strong Aussie dollar allows car makers to cut prices or up equipment levels, the latter being the far more profitable option for manufacturers.

VGA has shown this with the extra features in the $32,490 TDI Pacific.

It is a shame that VGA doesn't adopt the same approach with the GT (and GTi, for that matter) and up the equipment levels or at least offer some price breaks on the overpriced options.
There are other differences as already spelt out as well as options only available on the GT.
You seem to me that youre more worried about the value for money, some arent and dont mind paying extra for premium features or options.
Go away and buy something else.

If its about the money thing.... VW arent well known for being cheap.....

Could probably grab a subie (Even the new model Falcon for basically the same price!)

The i30 is a bloody good car for the money. My work mate has the diesel version, and after driving it a few times, I'm very impressed. The dynamics are well sorted, the gear shift is good, it's very quiet and smooth, the ride quality is excellent and the fuel economy is outstanding. The interior, although not exactly up to VW standards, is a marked improvement for Hyundai and with the optional rims and body kit , it's not a bad looker either.

I seem to have set the pigeon among the cats.

I didn't set out to make those who have already acquired GT TDIs so defensive about their purchases. But as a value proposition, irrefutably, the extra five grand for a GT TDI delivers a lot less incremental value since VGA "sportified" the Comfortline and even threw in ESP (which alone was worth a cool $790 beforehand).

No matter; I certainly appreciate the less partial and more mature comments earlier in this thread.

Lamentably, the latter posts seem to deride the pursuit, or analysis, of value-for-money. Such opprobrium might better serve this forum were it directed at VGA rather than the messenger.

For what it's worth, far from following the link to Hyundai (which while a less costly brand is not my idea of value), I've canceled the oil-burning GT and have settled on a GTI. I will however take the other suggestion and "go away" and return to more like-minded company.

So thanks again to those who made kind and helpful contributions. The later comments reminded me of those kids complaining ad nauseum about "[Daniel] Craig not [being] Bond".

But VW owners form a broad church whereas the median age of participants in car forums such as this undoubtedly struggles to surpass that of the adolescent and so such intemperance is to be as expected as much as it should be tolerated and embraced, if only in wry amusement.

Good luck future posters; them cats talk mean!

OT: Your language reminds me of how my Dad writes (he is a journalist) I love your choice of words haha.

I do understand however how your comments can tick people off! nothing worse then some one insinuating that you got ripped off =P

For people in NSW and on P's the GT TDi is the only "sporty" golf i could go for. I believe the price difference (quite steep it may be) is quite worth it after driving an old sportline TDi and my old girl.

That said, if I had a full licence there is no way I would have picked the GT TDi over a 2.0 GTI !

hopefully the post is not to juvenile (open to criticism though)

Being a mature person with the aptitude for learning all that is current vw and forum formations. I'm quite surprised some small rib tickling would bring about such a foot stomping response. Did you bring your bat and ball just to go home without an innings?

A lazy attempt at fobbing off a genuine poster hardly gives that cat a wail but a limp meow.

Perhaps it is the median age of forum dwellers who seek value in their car, spice in their wine and service with polished precision; that the internet vacant of trolls and flamers might be of expectation.

I am certain, however, you will be quite happy with the forthcoming GTI.

                        Metrolex,

would be interested to see what you make of the GTI.

Me personally I was sold on TDI when I hired a 1.9 MY07 in Denmark a few years ago. Not giving it an easy time I got 5.3l/100k, and the torque, good for traffic.

Ended up getting GT Sport TDI, must admit I eyed off the GTI but was a bit put off by premium unleaded, also non diesel a bit less torque so more revs needed in traffic.

You may wonder why not TSI, the diesel is proven, I think the TSI needs a bit more time to establish itself, it also needs revs.

Only needed to test out DSG so organised a test drive, was sold.

I haven't looked back, the Golf is a good car which ever model you get, horses for courses.

I was just doing a Google search for something and this post came up in the search, the ironic part about it is that I think that the guy who originally posted it might have saved me the wait on my GT, because it was around about the time I put my order in and I was told there was one car in Aus. matching what I wanted, and it's identical to the car he rejected. Thanks

We are currently proud owners of a GT Sport TDi 170 (bixenons, the proper red and many other options ticked. When we selected the little beastie we tested several available cars 2.0 103Kw whatever, GT sport manual and GT Sport DSG, we were so impresed with the DSG GT sport that we really didnt worry about the cost (Flogged off some shares at just the right time so it ended up costing much less than waiting later)
Bottom line; we wanted a diesel, the GT sport was far and away the best thing we drove and 5.500KM later we couldnt be happier (well actulaly I could if the chief pilot would let me drive more). the only thing we could think of that may be better would be a 330dM type BMW. But I'm tinking of some mods like R32 brakes, Phaeton wheels and Coilovers that we will organise after the first 100.000Km (of course german decimilisation)
