Pacific is New Sportline and Undermines value of GT TDI
As I said earlier it would be best if you drive all the different models including petrol and then try to make a decision from there. At the end of the day it is your decision and not a cheap one. Best of luck and just remember to enjoy yourself and take your time.
i dont understand this agonising over the different models...
I test-hooned a GTI and I was sold on what I wanted in an instant.
(looking back though....I should have either gone a GT Sport 2.0TDI if i used my HEAD or a second hand R32 if my heart wasn't in buy brand new mode. With a 6spd manual stick and a man pedal slightly to the left of the brake. )
Thankfully I've been driivng alot of other cars lately and even with the few flaws mine has, I can't believe what an awesome car it is to drive. Really starting to love it....flaws and all. Big change compared to what I was saying about it only 1 month ago.

I think you just answered your question YOM, hence why the advice is to try all models Petrol, Diesel, Manual and DSG !!!

Russ
Sage advice
I also test drove models I had no intention of buying.
After all, why not? You may learn something from it.
eg I discovered that I personally couldn't live with a 3 door - something I never thought about before. I also discovered the GTI was too hard core for me. Also that I loved the DSG. All this after I'd intended buying a 3 door manual GTI. I even heavily considered GTI Polo - after borrowing one for a long test drive, I also crossed that off my list - despite the MUCH lower cost.
Bottomline: you can't make decisions from a position of ignorance. (excuse the harshness of this - it's a quote, after all)
2007 Golf GT | DSG | TR | roof | iPod rubbish | R line fog grilles | R satin mirror caps | R pedals | R console trim | colour coded GTI valences | R32 Ormanyts
I drove the TSI yesterday and loved it... that constant pull from idle to redline.... But the oiler has that surge of torque as the turbo comes on line...
Tough choice!
I might make a lowball offer on the 2nd hand diesel. Failing that, I'll make a low ball offer on a new TSI
Common Rail Diesel - I wish. As discussed elsewhere Common Rail has only recently (last 2 months) been introduced for 103Kw diesel. The 125Kw is still Pumpe-Duse.
What?? Are you saying the Pacific TDI is common rail?
I bought a pacific tdi
This thread makes me feel better and that im not missing much out on getting a GT instead
Yes, I agree. I'm sure the GT/GTi/R32 are fantastic in their own ways. But I really needed a city car and a tourer with long legs and my Pacific fits the bill very nicely. The handling is very nice and a lot sharper than most other make of cars in this category.
The MK VI Golf has the CR diesel engine, the MK V was PD.
Just thought I would put my .02 cents worth in as a GT TDI owner and say that in all honesty if you haven't really driven a GT TDI ( I mean not just around the block for a quick test drive) then you really have no idea what they drive like. I drive both as my son Cam recently purchased an '07 Comfortine 2.0 TDI and I have driven it on several occasions. I find it a pleasure to drive, it has plenty of power and excellent fuel economy, it doesn't however handle the same as the GT (which is to be expected) and it still doesn't have the same raw grunt and the GT performance. I still think that anyone who purchases a Comfortline or (now) Pacific TDI will not regret doing so, however if they were to drive a GT TDI a few times in between I'm sure they would see that they really are a superb vehicle and IMO worth every extra cent.
Yes Russ, but not 'alone in the field'... 'in a field of their own'! (one the supercharger, the other the turbo )
