As for not buying one, it's a list of 'minor' inconveniences (that really should not exist with this type of car). The engine, gearbox and drive make up for the rest
Sorry, I thought you meant that some golfs had a traditional econ mode (like you said, where the compressor is at half duty cycle - or whatever) and others didn't. I believe they changed the "econ" button to an "AC" button on later models.

I think it's brilliant! You can adjust the mirror to be able to see down the side of your car and have no blindspot.

I thought that VW were being mingy not doing the mirrors properly at first too. I wonder though if there isn't a good reason.

The DSG shifter and surround for example. RHD the +/- is on the left hand side and for LHD +/- on the RHS.
          08 R32 5Dr DSG...AWESOME!

            You should all buy R32s!
Just some harmless fun balkanac. We all love our vw's otherwise we would never have bought them. My old wrx had a list 4 times as long of annoyances. Still loved the car. No petrol cap holder however does frustrate me the most - the year is 2008 not 1990!!

Hi Ozgriff, the old style economy mode is not required on the MKV as the aircon compressor is a variable displacement type.

In normal cars the compressor clutch is either on or off via a solenoid clutch. The economy mode you mention just sets a higher target temperature set point so the compressor has to work less.

In the MKV the compressor is always engaged and the output is variable from 2 - 100% (it always runs at least 2% to keep the system pressurised and avoid the coolant mixing with the oil). So to achieve the same effect as an economy mode, just set your thermostat higher.

Some bonuses of the variable displacement design is that the ECU reduces the compressor load under high throttle openings to give more power to the wheels, and there is no 'clonk', jolt and sudden cold air like you get when the old style solenoid clutches engage.

As you know, the ECON button in the MKV dials back the compressor to 2% (or maybe zero, i'm not sure). On other non-gti models (e.g. diesels) the ECO button also turns off the supplementary electric water heater.

                A few minor gripes...
+1 for the weird noise from the stereo on start up
                +1 for the small sunvisor

My major gripe is the annoying rattles I get from the back of the car when travelling on any uneven piece of road. Has anyone has any success with getting this sort of thing sorted with a dealer?

I took my car back recently to see if they could fix, although wouldn't be surprised if my car just sat there all day as it was no different when I got it back. Very frustrating...

Thanks Wokwn, that is a great answer. I thought it would have to be something to do with the climate control, as the cars I remember having the half a/c feature did not have true, always on, climate control.

It is a bit of harmless fun and goes to show the grievances are mainly ergonomic points of personal preference. I don't think I could have purchased a better car for what I was looking for.

On a side note, a friend bought a new beemer and I was shocked to see no cruise control, although it did have bluetooth and button ignition.

i'm glad someone else hears that "fart noise" from the stereo when you first start the car...

I also find the GTi's idle pretty boring, for a 2 litre turbo, it sounds nothing like my old SR20DET I had in my 180sx.

On ours (06 build) there are two holes in the outer plastic ring of the cap. It's designed to be held by the top of the petrol flap.
I think most people know about this but the fact that the door is circular makes it almost impossoble to balance the cap on the door.

                        And I although I don't own a mk5 Gti I still have a gripe about them.

Don't worry Carl, I know the diff between Mks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 - NOW. I also know your car, because I only ever seem to see it from behind
What I'm concerned about in this thread is the fact that people seem to be annoyed by little things about their cars ie petrol cap holders, sunglass holders etc. Could you imagine what would happen if we drove Hyundais?
Our cars are like are wives/gfs/significant others - we love them so much, that the little foibles seem to be magnified.

I think that it is a shame that the red is not a closer match to your lipsticks ladies.

                              What a whinge fest.

If there were no issues, why would VW bother with a MKVI?
