Hi pra32, i ordered a dbp 3dr r32 on 24/12/07... and i am expecting a march delivery (can't wait). hwy vw were very good, dan g. looked after me, and it was the most pleasant/least stressful buying experience i have had.

Nicely done! Yeah I had a good experience down there too. Some people haven't but I guess it comes down to the personalities of the salesperson and the buyer and how interested they are in selling a car at the point in time.

When I went down for my test drive I had to wait a bit because dan h. was doing a delivery of a Jetta. Aparently the 2nd Jetta to the same family, first one was for the wife and 2nd one for the husband. I thought at the time that you can't sell 2 Jettas like that if you don't treat people right.

when i went down to the dealer, i didn't walk in expecting to sign something that day. i was originally going to wait until Jan to place my order. but i had a good experience with the sales and the manager and i thought i might as well.

does anyone know how to request a sticky thread? like me there are quite a few new people to this forum and it would be good to create a thread with dealer experiences. Just a thought.

If they're not interested and they show it (which is what they did with me) then they are not professional salespeople - end of story.

I'm sure they treat some people okay - but the main game is to make everyone feel as if they have been treated the right way.

Colleagues of mine put more effort and finesse into selling $500 to $1,500 barbeques than these people put into selling $25,000 to $50,000 plus cars.

I suspect that if it wasn't for the fact that the cars basically sell themselves quite a few VW dealerships would simply not survive.

i had to wait around a bit as they were very busy (it was a Saturday) but once i was served it was good.

Well Springwood VW told me some porkies about vehicles they had "in stock" to try and close a sale (found out later they didn't have the vehicle in stock at all). They nearly got the sale anyway, but he wouldn't budge the last $500. Also tried to rip me off on the price of a genuine bootliner for my Jetta. Test drive was also far too short.

Drove across town and Austral gave me the price I wanted.

In-laws have had 1x Seat and 2x VWs with Austral and were happy, so I preferred Austral.

                      QUOTE]

You're lucky, I never got to the test drive. The Highway VW salesboy made me sit down and answer a set of questions regarding who I was and where I lived. I also had to provide my driver's license for his inspection.

When I complained, he said:" Well it's like this - we are asking you into our home so we have to know who you are." All up, I found it to be a rather humiliating experience and one that I certainly never faced with Austral or Boettcher Motors (where I bought my Jetta). In fact, I got so annoyed with him I walked out.

And why did the idiot go out of his way to p*ss me off? I'm not an 18-year-old wanting to trash a GTI during a 10 minute test drive. I'm a 50-year-old businessman who just wanted to gauge the torgue of a VW TDI.

That is disgraceful behaviour. Pity there's no one to raise a complaint with that give a rats.

I think it takes a certain arogance to become a car salesman. And why wouldn't you be? Nearly everyone who comes in is emotionally attached to the car they want to buy and they know this and play on this at every available opportunity. And they probably think that you're the ones missing out if you don't buy from them!

I had a 2 very short test drives with them too! Granted it was one of the dealer owned R32s they were wanting to sell but I bet they take them out for more than just test drives!

I stirred the pot a fair bit with Audi and through them Doncaster Audi over the way their (non) salesmen behaved. Start writing complaints. It may not work with one complaint, but they all add up.

They get my licence when they hand over a set of keys. My details are written on it. No test drive, no info about me, and no sale.

I've had a totally different experience at Lennock Motors in Canberra. Friendly salespeople, no BS (if they didn't know they said so, offered to find out and did !). No problems with test drives, even when I came back for a second set of drives to help me decide (which is what test drives are all about).

They did take a photocopy of my licence and I give them details to fill in on a form, but I'm pretty sure they need this info for insurance purposes and also in case the car gets booked for speeding (not that any of us would exceed the speed limit while driving a demo, would we now ) If I'm serious about buying a car I have no problem with them knowing who I am.

End result was that I bought one vehicle from them 12 months ago, and am pretty close to buying another one. So it pays to be nice to all customers, as that is where lots of business comes from (repeat sales and referrals of new customers as well).

If you are unhappy, buy elsewhere, but be sure to inform the dealer principal of what you did (ie took your $$$$ to where you got better service), and exactly why. If you have no choice (only one dealer around), still contact the dealer principal, and maybe VW Australia if you get the brush-off). I think some (inexperienced) salespeople make a snap judgement about whether someone is a serious buyer or a "tyre-kicker" without having enough information to make that decision yet.

Previously when I was buying a car one local dealer had the model and colour I wanted in stock but was being difficult about a test drive, so I went elsewhere and had to order one in (took a couple of months, but I wasn't giving my $$$$ to a place that mucked me around when I wanted to buy). It was quite enjoyable ringing the first dealer to tell them I had bought elsewhere because their salesman was a ****head.

Hwy VW told me that they are only allowed to keep the photocopy for 2 weeks and then they destroy them. My last camera ticket took about three weeks to come through though so they must keep them for longer.

Isn't it funny just how wrong first impressions can be. Go down in jean shorts and a tshirt and more than likely you'll get no attention at all.

i always go to dealers with tshirt, shorts and a pair of crocs. never got refused test drives when i requested one. i am 30yo and some of my clients thought i just graduated from uni because of how young i look (i do wear shirt, tie etc for work).

all the dealers i visited (including 2 Honda, 1 Mazda and Hwy VW twice) took a photocopy of your licence for the reasons mentioned above which i have no problem.

i brought a mate with me on the test drive and the sales let him drove as well, and it was as long as my test drive.

but what Rileyowner experienced is just wrong.
