Here is why.
How much of oil you top up? Is it 1L or 2L and secon top up 1L or more - how many top ups you would do? You would end up driving on wrong oil. It is common sense isn't it.
Cheers.
MRL T5
So far 5000km after service no topping up needed, but lets leave it at that.
I don't want this to turn into who is right and who is wrong...

I'm not trying to prove that I'm right.
Person who sent you e-mail didn't have to have right information to pass on. I just don't like to give wrong advice on which oil to use. Following car manufacturers recommendations on which oil to put in engine is the only right way to me. Offcourse when you go to the dealer to buy oil for the engine you expect that bloke behind the counter at spare parts would sell you or tell you which oil is right. But what qualification does he have? He could be just the salesman.
Right oil for TDi from 2007 from Castrol has label which says Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow VW Long Life III 5W-30
Here is Castrol Lube guide: several months ago it was saying Castrol Edge 5W-30 today it states this.

And it costs around $85 for 5L for which I think is too much but look on a flip side.... VW dealers have market cornered
I hope that will help you in the future when you buy oil for your engine.
I thought that correct oil for TDI is 507.00 and 507.01
Some one correct me if I am wrong or point me to correct page at owners manual to look up the numbers?
And here I thought that VW Australia would know which oil can be used to top up fluid levels
I agree with that 110%

Where can you buy it?

What does your owners manual recommed using, 506.01 or 507.00? Two different spec oils.
only place you can buy tdi specific oil is at the dealer. and yes its around 80 bucks... plus another 20 for an oil filter if you're doing the change but you still save a sweet 100 doing it yourself than if youd given it to the dealer to do...

Mate, you can use what ever oil you like - it is your car.
If I was told or e-mailed by VW that I can use not VW specs oil for top ups, I would ask them how much of oil I can put in engine in total. Better still contact VW Germany and verify it.
I personally don't have a problem to buy right oil with right specs even for top ups.
If you drive a new car you shouldn’t have a problem to pay once a year $85 for oil.

That is part that I am not sure of.....
I found it.

If MKV golf has diesel particulate filter with or without long life service ( don't know what it means) it is 507.00 and without particulate filter, with LongLife service it is 507.00 and 506.01 and without LongLife service is 505.01

That is very good idea...
I will reply to an email sent to me and ask the very same question. Thanks for that
In Europe TDIs can have either fixed interval servicing or longer service intervals based on actual usage (I think the engine monitors oil quality somehow). In Australia they are all on fixed interval servicing (15,000Km/12 months, less in severe duty conditions). I wouldn't want to go any longer anyway, as I believe in changing oil regularly in diesels.
To simplify things, just use VW 507.00 in ALL recent VW TDIs, except for the 5 cyl without DPF, which must use 506.01. I wouldn't risk my motor for the sake of $50 (or even $100) savings on oil. PD TDIs seem prone to wear problems on cams, followers etc if their oil is anything less than perfect.
2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).
Lately, there have been countless threads asking again and again, "What oil should I use". Please don't ask it again! Read this first. For what it's worth, there is not much here which is not in your owner's manual, but somehow nobody ever seems to read those ...
This question has to be...
It seems that in the US VW dealers thought it was OK to put the wrong (ie not to correct VW spec) oil in VWs, causing lots of serious engine problems (apparently the VW documentation was rather confusing)
For a discussion on 506.01 vs 507.00 oils for the 5 cyl TDI motor see:

Yes, that’s correct, valve train components in PD TDi need correct VW specs oil especially 5 cyl without DPF (up to2007).
Any other VW engine today needs VW specs oil to prevent piston rings sticking (which can result in higher oil consumption).
Any body who needs to top up oil in engine or even do his own oil change should read carefully owners manual located in the glove box and just to be 100% sure that he is using latest oil check it with the VW dealer, and if the information from the dealer is not what is in the manual one should start asking questions and/or verify it with VW Australia.
