Same cost as mine. But with the oil usage, mine was similar. Used a couple of litres in the 1st 4000 (which brought the oil light on) and then nothing to 10000 or 11000 then it was back to the minimum mark at 14000. It doesn't use oil consistently for some reason so I don't think there will be a difference between oils as they are all high quality.

Its not so much about the weight, it is more about the properties from what I can gather and more important when talking about diesels; but plenty of discussions all through this place on the subject of oils aint oils...

            Hi guys

            My wife & I purchased a 2L MK V TDI mit DSG 22 dec 2005.

It has done over 40k since and does consume oil. The guys at TDIClub say that you should leave oil in for the full 15k driven until the first service. I, however, did the old world stuff and said 'no way am i going to leave the first fill of oil in the crankcase for 1 year/15k!!!!' So, i took a 5l container to the dealer and said: 'fill er up'. I was told at the time no oil packs were available but dealers had 200l drums they decanted from (rang 3 dealers and was told the same story).

Bought a filter and magnetic oil plug and did the first oil change myself. As far as i can see no-one has received official word that the oil in the first fill is any different from the 505.01 oils used as the 'factory recommended oil for oil changes'

The oil level did go down between my oil change & the first official oil change. Topped it up and do give it curry as recommended by the guys at TDIClub when i get to drive the car. Since then we've done 2 official oil changes at the recommended oil change times of 15k & 30k and the oil level has dropped but not to the lower mark (i check oil every 2nd week). I once read that with a 16-valve motor you have 2x the amount of oil loss via valves compared to a 8-valve head, and as such oil consumption is to be expected.

As to oils that are thin or thick: the viscosity of 505.01 oils are 5W30 or 5W40 dependent on manufacturer. Remember the TDI's have an oil cooler that heats/cools the oil as needed. So i figure the oil differences (other than viscosity) are in the additive packages used by the oil manufacturer. To me: use the thinner oil to minimise pumping losses and increase fuel economy.

I stand to be corrected but my understanding is that 507 oils are 100% synthetic and that they will all be 5W30. Please see the following link.

Yes, some of the guys there are anal about their 'used oil analysis' - UOA, but they can probably be classified as 'officionados' compared to me who drives his car and does the oil changes to save cash by not giving the dealerships any more than they need to do for warranty purposes.

Interesting read, I love this forum!

In the last 24,000km I have replaced the oil 3 times! 15 liters used up! VW tell me that this is normal but I find it hard to believe. My car is sitting on 85,000km, no outcome reached on this thread, wondering if a problem has been diagnosed?

My 2009 1.6 litre Jetta TDI with just under 55,000 ks shows a just noticeable drop from the top mark on the dipstick when the 15,000 ks come up. Maybe 1/10 th of the distance to the low mark.

Hi i do have some oil cansomption isues, i did found on my 2.0t FSI (BPY) 2006 GTI an oil leaking on my tubo and pushing it to the intake system this did not let eny residuo on floor or eny visible leak, what it keep happening it that oil that leaks on the intake it will send it to the engine cylinders and burning it off wich is very hard to diagnose since is not visible, i found it out cuz i was tired of the dealer thellin me it its normal, wich i am i thecnician i toke the turbo apart and found the leak, it seems to be coming from the positive crankcase ventilation (pcv) on the back of the engine valve cover wich in other vehicle u could replace it i hsvent found that the vehicle have a pcv unfortunally im still investigating the issue i will post it when ill find out.

im not saying thats ur case but in ur case i will unplug the pcv hose from the back of the valve cover to see if theres eny oil leaking thru.

                  hope this was helpfull.

Putting my 2009 Jetta 1.6 TDI in for its 60,000 k service next week and the oil levels sitting where it was when I got it back from its 45,000 k service, spot on the top line on the stick. Unusual?
Maybe its because its always cruising at a steady speed around 100k and gets little city type stop start??
                    Brake pads should last forever???
Guess all VW motors aren't equal.
                    Cheers all

                      Hey Dubbers,

I would like to get on to this conversation too. I have a 06 GTI and the oil consumption does scare me a tad. I have asked my dealer what the go is with the consumption. To cut a very long story short. They did an oil consumption test and they drained 4L in 1 min 40 seconds. What they didn't tell me is i had to bring the car back after 1000kms to do the test again. I didn't do this and drove the car till the oil light came on.

Just has my 60k service and did another oil consumption test. This time they drained 3.31 L of oil in 2min 54 seconds and ill take my car back after 1000kms this time.

But the above figures is where I get confused.

                      4L in 1min 40
                      then
                      3.31 L in 2min 54.

How do the calculate who much oil is being used? He said to me there is a very technical mathematical equation behind the test. I feel like i am being mucked around by my dealer. Has anyone gone through the same process. Curious as i have a new engine installation on the line if it is consuming to much oil.

                      Cheers

Check my oil every couple of weeks and no noticeable drop in oil level. I put a cupful in last month as it looked a liitle bit lower than usual. I do a lot of highway driving not much city stop and starts, so may account for low oil use

That sounds like someone is trying to confuse you with "science..."

Oil consumption is measured with the odometer and the dipstick — and you do not drive until the oil light comes on, you check the level regularly and add oil when required, keeping a record of how much you add and the odometer reading at the time.

How long it takes to drain the sump depends on how much is in the sump, the size of the drain hole and (if you want to get really scientific) the atmospheric pressure plus the specific gravity of the oil.

No properly maintained piston engine made today should need oil added between services under at least 200,000K — if the mfr/dealer tells you it's "normal to use (whatever quantity) per 1000K" that's nothing more than a cover for sloppy factory standards.

All engines do use a little oil — there'd be something wrong if they didn't — but it shouldn't be enough to require additional oil.

As a new jetta owner I will put in my 10c worth. I have an 06 FSI (70k) and I have just covered 7000km. It had Mobil 1 5-50W in it and I have just topped up with same with 700mls, so if my maths is correct I am using 100mls for every 1000kms of varied driving, so 1.5 litres between every 15k service.

Im gonna put in my experience too. Ive had my 2008 TFSI since easter and just ticked over 5000kms that ive driven it, and ive had the oil light come on THREE times. The first time I took it to the dealer because I was close by and they topped it up for free, and stupidly I didnt check the levels or buy some spare oil. Then a couple of months later the light came on AGAIN, so I went back to the dealer to buy some oil and they again topped it up for free. I wish I asked how much they put in each time because id like to know how much it was using. At the second top up I bought 5L of oil to have at home. Anyway today the light came on yet again, so I topped it up and it took 2L. Now it astounds me that this car is using so much oil. Its definitely not leaking because my driveway has no stains. Its due for a service in a couple of weeks so ill talk to them about it then.
