As apparently I'm still several months of delivery I'm not sure if there is even a space centre console switch space, but is it possible to get a garage door opening centre console switch and necessary hardware installed in a MkVI golf? Just seems like a good idea to me as my current garage door opening is the size of an early 1990's mobile phone!

Yes, if you check the link on my page above you can even get a garage door symbol button that looks oem with a oem switch.

There would be no problems with wiring that to your remote and the Mark VI has 5 spaces for buttons and depending on your options will only have 1 to 3 buttons in use.

As someone who has gotten in there and made a bit of a mess that took some cleaning up, this looks just awesome!

It's not bad when you consider the cost of the switch in Australia is around $80 IIRC and this a custom illuminated one whereas you're limited with the genuine ones to a few different symbols. Even doing it as per my guide you're looking at $20 for the switch + an hours or two works to build it.

Sounds good to me. What I would like to find though I guess is a "transponder" to connect to the garage button to activate the garage door. Not to sure where to start looking for an item like this. I currently utilise 2 different door (one at home, one at the missus place) remotes, so the ability to activate multiple doors would be a bonus. I see that an aftermarket sun visor is available for the Passat (?) that can achieve this but I would prefer console buttons if possible.

As for garage doors, just grab a spare remote/keyfob from eBay or similar then solder in a couple of wires either side of the micro switches and then wire that into your new dash switch, no reason you can't have two or three switches in place for different doors provided you have the space. I then hot glued the keyfob in behind the dash. It means when you have to change batteries it's a bit of a pain to get at, but it's not like you do that often.

(In my case I also wired in a couple of plugs so when it comes time to sell (or if I wanted to use the botton for something else) I can just unplug the remote and remove it.

In his case he can solder both remotes to the one button as they're at different locations. It's easy enough to wire in an DC to DC converter to the cigarette lighter socket for the remotes so you don't have to worry about the batteries, the other benefit is you need the car key in the car and the ignition on to open the door so if some lowlife POS breaks into the car outside they can't open the garage. You could also wire the remotes over to somewhere like the door bin on the mark V or use velcro and put them up under the dash. I have mine on my keyring as it operates the alarms and also both doors so I don't want to leave it in the car.

It took a bit of searching but I managed to hunt down this thread and the place that sells these buttons. I still think the price is pretty high for a button... but I since I cleaned out the garage and can get the Cab in there I'm hating the remote floating around and want a cooler option... like this button back again

So I ordered one and look forward to it coming in soon enough.

They are a cool addition....only thing I found is that they are a slightly different shade of "black'....depends on the lighting at the time...more noticeable in my case, as would be yours possibly, being a convertible.

Does anyone know of a step by step guide to removing the centre console? I am installing a RCD510 and want to add a USB port in one of the dummy button spaces. There is heaps of info on removing the stereo, but how do you remove the lower section near the gear stick?
