Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

As usual Mav has let his opinion bring down another thread when someone dares to question the all mighty being know as VAG...

I wouldn't touch DSG with Mav's wang. Sure it may be faster than a manual, until it blows up or fails to work... Good luck on the fix, but get it fixed and get rid of the car. Once you are out of warranty, you are screwed... This in my opinion. Mav, if you don't like it, that's cool... I'm getting another drink.

Having looked up to a MK5 / MK6 - there is no way i would have the DSG without a warranty

its a great system and it usually works fantastic but if its goes wrong - you are !!!

Just ordered a MK6 GTI!! (moving from a MK1) with DSG!!! I drove a few and loved it!!

Super slick and the wife can drive it!! Loving the flappy paddles as well!

If three VW dealers are telling you it doesn't need to be replaced and they are all following VW's test procedure did it occur to that either the problem is intermittent and you haven't been able to demonstrate it or that your DSG box is working within the parameters set by VW.

Got anything useful to add Blitzen? Read my posts, they're factual and offer relevant information to the thread.

Again anything useful you can add? The DSG is essentially two manual gearboxes which are bulletproof with very few failures, the same applies to the two clutches. Some and I reiterate _some_ mechatronics have a solenoid that is out of spec which is not going to to damage the gearbox or the clutches however it does cause some awkwardness at low speed. In the majority of cases a mechatronics problem is not going to cause any damage and can be driven around without requiring replacement so the prophets of doom are way off the mark.

VW dealers have replaced mechatronics units before that have been within spec hence why they do a more thorough test now, problem is that people on the forum read about a problem and immediately decide their car has it when it's operating within spec.

So to those that are easily lead by such shows at a current affair and today tonight you should steer clear of the evil DSG, for those that can think for themselves, accept that a small percentage will have a fault and realise that it's not an automatic transmission you should consider a DSG.

Why don't we do a poll in the general section that shows who has has problems with their DSG gearboxes?

I personally have no faith in them and would never buy a car equipped with a DSG box.

A poll would not reflect an accurate assessment of DSG units with problems compared to overall units made.

This forum is not subscribed to by all VW owners, and therefore the Poll results will be skewed. A better alternative would be if someone from VW Australia could share the ratio of failures vs DSG units in Australia....then your fears may/may not be proven. until then.....it's a bit like "Chicken Little".

What about a poll comparing problems with 6 speed manual box v's DSG

The DSG in my '07 GTI has done almost 50000kms of daily driving and has been absolutely flawless... So smooth that most of the time I don't notice it even engage clutch/change gear when in D mode, even up in the hills.

I would venture a guess and say that many other DSG owners feel the same way

X2 - 48k, smooth as silk, no issues at all. I love everything about it and I have been a devoted manual driver my whole driving life. The gear box is cool once you get used to it. Once you get passed thinking its an auto. Manual mode is awsome, super fast changes with a blurp, kickdown in D is amazing, instant torque, heck now I even like to drive in 'S' from time to time just to hear those rev matched blips on down shift, it gives me a shiver down my spine.

Better than a manual, better than an auto. This is the future. Its a no brainer.

Why are we crying about a cost that seemingly no-one here has even had to fork out for? Look at the recalls of other cars around the globe (and in OZ).

all valid points but for me it still leaves me undecided now as i was ready to buy my dsg equipped r32 weekend just gone and the dealer only offers 3yr warranty and charges another 2.5k for an extra 3yrs! which in my view puts second hand dsg equipped cars without any sort of warranty in murky waters

Near 50k on the clock here, and my GTI is with the dealer to have the mechatronic unit replaced as I type this.

My issues - some jerkiness on takeoff (not as much for me, much more so when the mrs drove), and some jerkiness in reverse.

I had always taken this as getting to understand how to drive with the DSG rather than a fault ( in retrospect stupid thinking as no car should be acting as such) and asked the service dept to look at it during the last service. Was soon advised that the replacement was needed.

I'll post when I get the car back for a post replacement drive. I am concerned with little over a year left on warranty for the go forward, that there wont be any extended warranty for the part itself - as advised by the dealer. Might contact VW Australia on point, as if it is true that VW USA is providing additional warranty then we should have the same offer here.

                              2006, MY07 DSG R32, 32,000km, never missed a beat.

Ive raced cars for years, and am usually a manual nazi and said id never own anything other than a manual, but the DSG (as mentioned above) is the way of the future, and once you accept it is more a manual than an auto, you'll love it. Drove a manual and a DSG R32 back-to-back on the same section of windy road, was keen on buying the manual, but to my surprise I actually found the DSG in manual mode more engaging, and switched to getting the DSG.

I'v had a DSG R32 for over 12 months now... and I'm really starting to get that itch for a man pedal again.
But then again I love my DSG!
