Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Handy to determine the 'accuracy' of your speedo - set cruise control and flip menu's to see the difference between GPS and reported speed.

What I really need to find out is if the Aus maps have 'voice' information in them.. voice activation may just be a microphone install away (on the new firmware...).
Just be aware its canbus speed and not road speed.
GPS is the only "more" accurate way to check speedo.

A neat little trick, though not quite a completely hidden feature, is the way the passenger side mirror on the R32 angles downward when you are reversing into a parking spot. Possibly a desperate attempt by the factory to save you from redesigning your enormous wheels.

First time it happened i thought it was my imagination - until i RTFM.

I have heard that flooring the throttle a couple of times with the ignition turned on - motor not running (obviously..), will reset the DSG to factory specs, dropping all the learned information. Haven't tested that one yet though.

oh yeh - the parking light caught me out too, had the left indicator on when the ignition was turned off.. thats a nifty safety feature.

I found this one out at the car wash, decided to try out the touch free automatic car wash system in Balwyn (because I felt lazy).

Idling, it's difficult to hear my Golf running and thinking it was off I turned the ignition key, when I realised it was still idling and I only could turn the key a little (one click) I realised oh sh*t and was expecting the loud CRUNCH of the starter motor kicking in on an engine that was still running, instead, I heard nothing! The starter was disabled when the engine was on.

Thank the lord for German engineering and design! what else did they think of??
One thing it doesnt do though is start the car from just one turn.. you still have to hold it until it starts

And if you stall it you will have to switch it right off and then back on again before the starter motor will operate - a design consequence of the system saving people from the loud crunch methylnick was concerned about.

Of course if the designers were REALLY smart they would have only disabled the starter when the engine was running, rather than preventing you from restarting when the engine wasn't running

I think the very very first Mk5s had a 'bug' in this regard..

My old Mk5 (one of the first) used to turn over - but never fire. The only way to start it up again was to remove the key completely...

I thought it was stuffed the first few times...

Hmm my Mk4 had this as well. If you turned the key and it wouldn't start, you'd have to remove the key completely to have another go.

Please excuse me for being a little off topic but can you stall a DSG?

Not if it has been designed properly and working correctly.

From the RNS diagnostic menu it appears you can see more than just CANBUS speed - you can also see GPS speed, lat / long, accelerometer readings etc.

You can also change it from the full height MFD menu

Was this an option? because mine doesn't do it.

The mirror will automatically dip if you have factory parking sensors and you have the mirror knob in the "L" position.

So it's a double win :banan:
