Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I have a Mk4 golf (I know, wrong section!) but this thread is pretty interesting and my golf does a little trick too.

When adjusting the side mirrors, when the knob is turned to the driver's side and adjusted, the passenger side automatically adjusts in time with it! Apparently, quite a few VWs do this little trick, fwas first told about it with an older model passat

If you activate the 'secret' diagnostic menu in an RNS510 you can see speed and even cornering loads etc Activating the menu depends on which version of firmware you run - some can do it just by holding setup for > 15 seconds, others need a VCDS edit / firmware correction.

Mav, is there a way to show the menu but have the air conditioning turned off on the dual climate control models?

Oh, are you referring to the climatronic screens maca? gmk2 mentioned this kind of data can be shown on the RNS510 secret menu? Is it possible?

Yep, lots of info you can get - the RNS510 has GPS data, gyro data and CANBUS data from the rest of the car so quite a few different 'diagnostic' readouts you can see - let alone all the other stuff (radio reception etc etc). Handy to determine the 'accuracy' of your speedo - set cruise control and flip menu's to see the difference between GPS and reported speed.

What I really need to find out is if the Aus maps have 'voice' information in them.. voice activation may just be a microphone install away (on the new firmware...).

But its taken me almost two years to realise that
the inside front door grab handles on my Jetta are both different.
Am I the only one not to notice this for so long?
Are the golf handles different to each other as well?
I actually went to the basement to check this out coz I thought you guys were talking about the door release handles . Me thinks it's to accomodate for the window/mirror switches. The Mk4's with electric windows have the same thing.

IIRC there are no Mk5s in the world that have manual front windows, so I guess they'd be all the same.

Here is another one I just found out, and I am not too sure why all car makers (at least in the cars I have driven don't have this).

I found this one out at the car wash, decided to try out the touch free automatic car wash system in Balwyn (because I felt lazy).

Idling, it's difficult to hear my Golf running and thinking it was off I turned the ignition key, when I realised it was still idling and I only could turn the key a little (one click) I realised oh sh*t and was expecting the loud CRUNCH of the starter motor kicking in on an engine that was still running, instead, I heard nothing! The starter was disabled when the engine was on.

Thank the lord for German engineering and design! what else did they think of??
