Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hidden tricks that are funner to discover by accident. And we did!

    Hi guys

Went to Video Ezy to get a movie to watch and parked the Jetta. I turned off the car with the indicator stalk still selected for the left (I didn't realise I'd done this). When I turned off the car it started dinging at me as if the lights were on and I thought what the heck? I checked the headlights to make sure they were off and went into the store.
When I was paying for the DVDs I looked out at the car and noticed the right hand brake light was on?? Just the right hand side. I thought maybe the light got "stuck on" when I was parking? I unlocked and locked the car again - no fix. I opened the car and pressed the brake pedal a few times - no fix.
I thought oh well looks like a call to VW Assist and the VW workshop.
Got in the car and put the key in the ign and again it starts dinging about the lights, then I spot the indicator stalk still selected. I move it to the off position as all is well.
My question is why would it complain if the indicator stalk was not centred when turning off the car? Is there some safety reason I'm not aware of?
If so , why would the brake light just for that side come on? Just to let you know the you've left your blinker on???? Or, is there a fault with my vehicle???

I will test leaving the right hand side on tomorrow...

    cheers!
    Tim

hey you can choose to select a side to leave your lights on, good for when you live on a street without streetlights and you don't want your car to be hit
it only beeps at you to let you know that its on and you are aware that if you leave them on for to long you may get a flat battery

Parking lights. You choose which side you want on with your indicator stalk and it activates the front pos. light and rear tail light. It will bing at you just to remind you that you're doing it.

The amount of VWs and Audis I see that have left their parking light on at the shopping centres are immense. Lucky it doesn't drain the battery (I did it once when I went to dreamworld for the day in my Bora...)

Might be time for another bit of light reading (but not all the stuff described in the manual is fitted to all cars). Do you know about opening/closing all your windows at once using the remote ? And on some cars if you have auto wipers you can leave the windows and sunroof partially open, lock your car and go away - if it rains the car will sense the rain and shut all windows and the sunroof too

And for those who have auto rain sensors, try putting it in reverse.. It'll activate your rear wiper automatically too..

And for those who don't, doesn't matter - just so long as your wipers are currently active (even on intermittent) it'll do it too..

Surprised me the first time I did it...

Oh and try opening up your fuel flap at speed.. It won't work.... Doesn't work unless you're going under 5ks an hour...

Now if only I could trick the RNS510 into playing DVDs when the car was going... I know there's hacks for it, but I don't want to pull my dashboard apart.

I was discovering at least one easter egg a month after buying my first Mk5.

the polo gti does a sweep of the rear window regardless of wiper stalk position. all you need to do is select reverse gear.

Also, if you have your aircon on in Auto and reverse, the aircon switches to recirculation mode, so exhauset fumes don't enter the car.

Maybe we should have a thread for all these nifty tricks.

VW has been doing this for 20 years bro. My 1983 Golf GTI had the same function, so does my 93 Cab.

Sort of on topic, when doing the digital speedo reading on the climate control lcd screen, is there a way of doing this and have the air con not turned on?

I've heard it's European feature where streets are much narrow and people park the cars sometimes in "impossible places by our Australian standards". So they leave side lights on so nobody bump into it...

It's been a fairly common feature in European cars for years. My father's 1965 FIAT 2300 even had a dimmer dial so you can adjust the intensity of the parking lights!
