i have just been doing some more research on this swap.

it would seem that it's NOT just a straight swap over.....

there have been a few people that have done the swap, and while the unit DOES plug in and work fine, there seems to be a problem,
in that the RCD510 does not shut down properly, and will drain the car battery flat in about 2 days.

this may be able to be altered by changing some setting in the ecu via VCDS, but so far i have been unable to find any answers.

it seems like the RCD510 does not allow the car to go into "sleep" mode when you remove the key. this will be a big problem for me,
as my car is only used one week in two. so it sits in the garage for a week at a time unused.

if anyone knows how to get around this problem when retrofitting the RCD510, i would be very interested to know how to do it.....

    Jason.

Someone had a problem with a headunit and changed the coding on the head unit which fixed it but there are no widespread problems so I wouldn't worry about it.

it wont stop me from trying the swap, but i have read of two separate incidents where the install of the RCD510 caused flat battery issues.

        guess time will tell....

I think it would be just the wiring. However, I will wait until you get yours and it is all up and running before I buy mine

            lol....

im hoping to find one that i can afford within about 3 weeks.
fingers crossed, it all goes well. There might be some configuration in the ECU that needs to be altered.

ill be doing a bunch more research before i am ready to buy, hopefully i will have it all figured out before then....

looks like ill have to join a couple of the UK forums, just so i can ask some of the earlier swappers if they have sorted the issue, and how they did it (if they have)
as a worst case scenario, i guess ill live with a "battery fighter" on my off weeks. hope that's not the only solution though...

No way. I wouldn't bother if it is going to drain the battery. I don't see why there would be an issue. We should call a local dealer and ask them if they have installed an RCD510 into our cars and had an issue.

I found this one, looks pretty good!

that unit looks good, and the price is great.
unfortunately, it will end well before i can get the $$$ together.

im still waiting for my govt bonus, and i have rego in 4 weeks.....

as for the battery issue, ill not really worry about it until i have to i guess.
i have posted a few questions on other forums (euro ones) where they have had the RCD510 for 2 years now.

im sure that have been more than a few retrofits done.
                ill post my findings.

as for going to a VW dealer here, i can already guess at the result...
"sorry, can't be done" or "sure, we can do that, $2500".......

Pretty sure you'll get the "sorry, can't be done" response.

They always seem to give that.. And it's up to you to have the balls and go against their advice...

i agree completely, and as soon as i have the money together,
and rego is done, i will buy an RCD510 and see how it goes.....

i assume a unit from the UK will work ok here (as far as FM band goes) ?

I was thinking, apparently you can get an RNS510 landed for $2,000. I think if it's only $1,000, I would rather just buy an RNS510. That way I will be guaranteed it will work and won't have the regret of "I wish I bought the Sat NAV one" later on.

Would you buy an RNS510 for $2,000 instead of an RCD510 for $1,000/$1,100 landed?

to me, it's a choice between the RCD510, landed at no more than about 1k, or the AVC and it's variants.

no way, no how would i pay for the RNS510, due to the expense of the map updates. and the fact that it supposedly does not show cash cameras.

i am still leaning towards the RCD510, as it will do everything i need it to,(even without the MDI) and i already have a good garmin GPS.

looks likely that a good RCD510 can be had for less than about $800 landed.
if the install goes smoothly, ill be happy as.... if it does have issues with the battery, i will bug some of the German aftermarket companies,
and see if any of them have an adapter (im sure that's all it would be).

from all the research i have done so far, the unit will plug straight in, and work great. it just seems to not power down completely.
so if you leave the car for a few days un-driven, you get a flat battery.

im certain that with a little more research, there is a solution out there.
i will post pics and my results once i get one, and have it installed.

I am going to buy the RNS510. I just don't want to think about the "If only I bought the SatNav" later on. I am guaranteed that this will work with my car, no risk.

It will cost $1,890 delivered. I will order tonight and let you all know how I go.

I will be interested in hearing your results.

                            One thing to remember though...
Both the RCD510 and the RNS510 were designed with 07+ cars in mind.
There's no guarantee that the RNS510 won't have exactly the same
                            Battery issues as the RCD510.

                            If you were swapping a RCD510 for a RNS510,
You could be confident of no issues. But there just might
Be some of the same issues with the RCD510

I will still get the RCD510. And I will watch for your results
                            With great interest.

Yes there is, the RNS 510 has been installed in cars right back to the first mark V's.

The RCD 510 came along after the RNS 510 and isn't an option on the Mark V (not for any technical reason).

There is no evidence to suggest that there is a power drain issue.

Personally I'd be shelling out the extra for the RNS 510 as it can do a lot more and has expansion options (video input, RVC etc). $2000 is a bargain for the unit when you consider the features.

Actually it is less than that now. I just received a price. 900 Euro + 125 Euro for shipping, which equates to AUD$1,886 delivered. Which is an absolute bargain!
