as yet, i have not installed my unit.
once it's installed (if i have the drain issue) i will make a tutorial of what's involved in a setting up a relay.

it should be very simple to do.
i would take the power feed from the radio side of the radio fuse to the switched input of the relay.
then connect the coil side of the relay to a power source in the car that goes low with the key removed from the ignition.

that will 100% solve the power drain issue for those that have it.
at this stage, i do expect to have to do the relay mod.

i will post my results in a few weeks once i have had the unit installed.

    Jason.

i ordered the adaptor today through the VW dealer.
cost was $54 and expected 2 weeks delay. (it's a German back order part)

Attached is a pic of the adaptor (i got it from another VW forum)
so it looks like i have a few weeks to wait until i can install the RCD510.

Here's a link to the RCD510 manual that i scanned and made into a PDF.

          Manual

if the mods find this inappropriate, feel free to delete the link....

the PDF file is aprox 20Megs in size, i tried to limit the final size as much as possible,
but at anything less than 150dpi, the pages were not very nice to look at.
the size is a compromise, but i would have ended up with a 50mb file at 300dpi.....

also, i picked up a 16gb SDHC card today and loaded 15.5gb of music onto it.
so im ready to go as soon as the unit is installed.

          Jason.

i picked up the adaptor today.

while i was there, i talked to one of their "techs" about the flat battery issue.
he said that he was aware of the problem, and said that he knew of no known fix....
i even asked about a Can Gateway upgrade (the supposed "propper" fix)

so looks like i will be relaying the main power wire....
this will delay my install by a few weeks

ill keep the thread updated on my progress....

            Jason.

I wonder if any of these "techs" have got in touch with Volkswagen Germany to see if there if a solution. I have already gone thru 2 batteries the last one in under a week. I am starting to wonder if these units are compatible with the early MK5 Golf's. May have to start looking for an RCD 500mp3

I should have my RCD500 by the end of the week. Am researching the Blaupunkt plug and play amps at the moment. Looks like you can actually plug an MP3 player directly into the amp according to specs. Would this be a better option rather than paying for a kit to enable MP3 on head unit?
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

i Spoke to my mate the auto sparky today about the drain issue.
i am going over to his place on Saturday after work to install the RCD510.

he is going to hook up a relay so that as soon as i remove the key, the main fuse line is disconnected from the RCD510.
once the key is re inserted in the ignition, the line will be reconnected.

this will solve all the power drain issues, and is an invisible, automatic set and forget solution.

i will try to get pictures while it's being done.

                    Jason.

Just a thought. Would this mean you would have to input the security code each time as power supply is totally cut off for an extended period?

                        apparently not.

i have been talking with another mkv owner in the UK with the same issue.
i got the relay idea from him actually. he has been pulling the radio fuse over night, to solve the problem.

i asked him if he had to re enter any of the pre-sets like radio stations and tone and bass levels.
he said no. he also didn't mention anything about the security code either.

my guess is that the radio has two power lines (same as most all modern head units) one is connected to constant power for memory purposes.
the second is connected to an ignition switched feed (the fused line).

by disconnecting the fused line, the radio will turn off, just like the ignition has been turned off.

also, as far as the security code goes, in the manual (both the RCD300 and RCD510) it says that once the code is input once, the car remembers the code.
so as long as the radio is in the same vehicle, it will not ask for it again.

you only need the code if the radios are installed in another car.

                        Jason.

Will be interested if you have success.
The reply I got from VW Australia is that these radios are NOT compatible with the early Golf 5
It looks like I may have to sell mine!
                          Good Luck

Only reason they said it's not compatible, is they don't want any legal liability.

My method is going to work 100% for sure.
The only down side is that the radio will no longer
Work without the key in the ignition.

That's not a big deal (for me anyway)
Will post the results on Sunday (hopefully)

Who uses the radio without the key in the ignition anyway, that will sure drain your battery regardless of if it is or isn't supported by VW

                              Did you see my pictures?
