things that annoy me in my mk5

I always shoulder check first - habit from driving a '58 beetle with no wing mirrors - but it's still quite distracting at night as they're rather bright.

I don't quite understand how it's a safety feature though.... ?

They're a highly visible indicator and unlike most front indicators they are almost at eye level which will make them a lot easier for other drivers to see, and thus hopefully help to avoid a collision.

The problem with the side indicator distraction is fairly easily remedied if you quickly turn your head and look to see if there's anything in the lane you want to go into before moving into it

thats true and thats what i do, but its not what im highlighting.

when i wish to go into a lane thats free, i check and indicate accordingly.

at the same time there may be a car in the lane next to the one i want to go into, travelling at the same speed.

whilst merging into the lane, i look into it, as most people do, and i will also glance at the car in the adjacent lane to make sure he's not coming into it.

this glance, whilst the indicator is flashing, can be mistaken for the indicator light of the OTHER CAR. obviously not knowing where every indicator light is on every vehicle on the road, any sort of amber flashing can trigger off a "crap i think he wants to go into the same lane at the same time" reaction.

ive had to back out a couple of times thinking that a person is wanting to same lane only to find out they dont.

my wifes euro also has indicator lights on her side rearviews, but theyre not visable from the cabin.

oh a couple more i forgot and im not sure if this applies for all mk5's.

* the drivers, side rear view mirror, bit at the end that makes the image all squished!

And the passanger side has similar treatment. This is mentioned in your manual as well. These are safety features, many cars come with aspherical sections. They show clearly anything that is in your blind spot!

Maybe the people complaining about these safety features should all drive 10+ year old cars? I assume none of you will buy the Mark 6 because it will have things like automatic distance control, park steering assist and so on.

* the indicators on the side rear views are visable from the cabin. so that sometimes when i want to get into a lane, and there is another car in the lane NEXT to the one i get into, i indicate, and the light from them sometimes looks like its the indicator light from the other car wanting to get into the same lane. more so have this problem on 3+ lane freeways where the people want to get into the middle lanes from the outside lanes and its all very hell for leather travelling at 100+km/h and all

I must say that I haven't had a problem with either one. If anything being able to see the indicator is good because it might prompt people to do a head check before changing lanes.

There's a simple fix for this, put some tape on the side and you don't see it.

I tihnk the most annoying thing about the MkV would have to be the wait from ordering to delivery.

As Maverick has just said, try a bit of tape over them or they bother you that much have the bulbs removed, problem solved !!

Or stay in the one lane and just keep driving

the sections in the mirror are annoying (its only on my drivers side) as it distorts the image for which i have no use of cuz i head check. whatever they introduce to stop you head checking (mirrors, LEDs, lights on the side rear views) i guess itll never stop me head checking.

all these are little annoyances and im sure you have your share of things youd like to change but not actually think of mentioning. i have had my fair share of cars and the list ive put up, is light reading compared to some of the other cars ive had.

ie, my wifes honda accord euro has the internal dash lights lit up all the time. if im leaving at night in a well lit area, i will forgot to turn the lights on, as the dash lights are already lit. this was a MAJOR annoyance and something i do quite a bit as i dont drive her car that much.

I always head check but these features are nice and add to your safety. You have to move with the times and these features are nice additions.

You can replace your mirrors with normal ones if you want.

Actually I can't really think of any faults with my Golf, it's the first car I've been completely happy with!

All of my previous vehicles have had automatic rear view mirror demisters, none of which were visible.......................... until my hand and the rag went out the window
