Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

It's not a visible demister strip

It's a line to show the driver that anything he sees from that line onwards is from the curved part of the mirror.

The demister is built into the molding behind the mirrors and does the whole mirror not just one tiny little strip.

      Yeah, might just do that.

How old where you previous cars?
2002 and 1998. So that pitches them before the change. That might explain the difference, then.

ou can fix the speed error by a simple change using Vagcom/VCDS, or you can use a GPS and work out the error and remember that at an indicated speed of 109 you're actually doing 100. It's really not that hard to do and there are benefits to leaving it that way.
I wouldn't mind doing the change but I don't have access to the equipment to do it. I have no problem making the adjustment with my right foot, either; my wish is that the speedo were more accurate than it is. (As an aside, the dealer mentioned the speedo error to us when we picked up the car. I would have thought it would be kept secret.)

      • the sections in the mirror are annoying (its only on my drivers side) as it distorts the image
The mirrors took me a while to get used to. I like them.

        • The outside mirrors took a little while to come to grips with.

Regular flat glass mirrors (set correctly) allow you to look, and if there's no car in them, change lanes safely.

The difference is that with the aspherical mirrors, if YOU SEE a car in them, it's NOT safe to change lanes. Once you use them in this manner, you'll learn to love them very quickly.

As for the repeater lamps in them, I like them - as the indicator sound is very quiet, and the repeaters catch your attention if you've not cancelled the indicator properly.

          Annoyances?
I wish the DSG manual mode was TOWARD the driver (as in LHD) rather than AWAY from the driver (same category as indicator stalks IMO).

I wish the turns lock-to-lock was faster.

I wish the sunvisors were longer - swung to the side, they leave a blank spot next to your eyes.

I wish the handbrake was between the seat & console, rather than taking up valuable storage space.

I wish the mirrors folded flatter.

I wish the exhaust tips weren't part of the muffler (they're crappy material).

I wish the iPod interface wasn't so lame.

All up, these are pretty minor gripes and are far out-weighed by all the really cool features that we all know & love.

(The DSG thing still blows, however...)

          • speaking of DSG, i wish there was a gear between D (too lazy) and S (too sporty).

and yes im still waiting for someone to figure out how to change the sequential shift on the DSG shifter

otherwise i love the car, put the foot down and booooosssstttt
How does the GT Sport TSIs temperature light/s work? Is it like some Suzukis that indicate cold / a bit too hot / way too hot or do you only get a single warning?

It is not an unusual set up, the same as an auto... pull back when things are slow, push forward when things are fast.

F1 cars are different, though. Are Porsche and other supercars the other way round as well (not driven one, but had been led to believe they are "fwd for slow, back for fast')?

I agree. I subconsciously pull it to change up only to see the revs climb alarmingly! . . .

                    • Trouble is that you're working against the effect of acceleration by having to push the lever forward, and the reverse situation when decelerating. It's so much easier when it's set up the other way 'round.

That's why it feels weird to many folks, and also why I never use the lever to change manually. I'd hate not to have the paddles.

                      • So how do you blokes cope when driving a manual, where changing from say 2nd to 3rd requires you to push both the clutch and the gear lever forwards?

                          What's a "manual"?

An excellent question. The answer is that the effect of depressing the clutch momentarily decelerates the car, thereby making the shift from 2 to 3 (or 4 to 5) easier!

Nope, new 997 PDK equipped Porsches are forward for upshift. Drove Carrera S recently. Gotta say guys these are very minor annoyances!
And I have yet to find a sunglasses holder in any new car that fits todays large frames. They seem to be more a spectacle holder to me!

The holders are not designed to hold these
