Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • things that annoy me in my mk5

had it for a coupla days now and i love it to bits, but heres a list of stupid things that annoy me, but aren't bad enough for me to love it any less.

    * the sunglasses holder is to friggen small. seriously i know aviators are still in, but theyre not my style and my current sunnies dont fit!

    * the ashtray is also too bloody small (i dont smoke!). i have a 12v splitter (one for the gps and one for an ipod tranny) and it basically leaves no room for anything else!

    * the VW bottle opener you get never stays in the hole that its meant to. always moves around and it gets in the way of the larger drinks

thats if for now. but like i said, i love it to bits.

i just wanted to have a rant!

I would have to agree with the sunglass holder, it would me better suited to granny glasses. My bottle opener doesn't move around at all maybe you could try a little bit of black insulation tape around the top edge to make it a tighter fit. Don't smoke either and use a GPS rarely so that doesn't bother me.

Nothing really annoys me on mine too much, pretty happy so far .....

What about using the centre where you have your drinks for the sunnies or splitter? Or maybe the compartment above your right knee for the sunnies. Use the the bottle holders in the doors for the drinks.

sunnies are now located in the armrest console

i sit at the lowest setting for the seat and so drinks in the door cards are WAY too far in front.

im still getting used to the extra compartments coming from a VR6 which had no armrest console, no glovebox, a much better centre console and thinner but longer door storage.

ill see what i can do with the bottle opener.....

The only thing that makes me shake my head everytime is how wet you and the doors trims get if you crack a window in the rain, or even with a wet car. My situation is amplified with roof racks, but you gotta wonder why there are just no real rain channels at all when there are so many other examples of clever engineering in the MKV.

Two things that are annoying are the lack of a light around the ignition key at night. Yeah, Ive almost know where it is now but I still stab it or end up using my finger to feel the keyhole. Weird since my mkv does have nice overhead red lights.

The other is the rain / window as cogdoc as alluded. Obviously if its raining hard the window is up. But if its spitting or u just cleaned the windscreen, the water seems to drip right on the drivers armrest window buttons, which scares me. Perhaps a small clear plastic lip on the upper window seal ? wouldnt look cool thou

I don't have a problem with water dripping when I crack down the window, probably due to the handy slimline weathershields. I am not overly happy with the amount of water that pours in down the sides when you open the rear hatch after it's been raining though, that could have been a little better designed

                Exhaust drone under 2k rpm.
                Indicators on wrong side
                Boot half closes too often
                Opposite of v8 linear power
                Rattles I can't even find
                Aircon is average at best
                Still an awesome car though

Biggest annoyance for me is that we only have a 'his' R32, and not one each.

The bottle opener dont have to stays in the rail. You can take it out and stack it in the cutout.

My bottle opener sits in nice and tight. It actually had a few notches and it clicks in as you slide it in.

The only issue for me is that the hard plastics in the lower console can be easy to scratch.

And that's how the golf likes it, it doesn't want someone wearing some dorky glasses driving it!

If you want to wear big grandpa sunglasses get a beetle, it has a massive sunglass holder that can hold both Mr and Mrs Grandpa sunglass's (full wrap around face covering brown tortoiseshell deluxe glasses included) in separate compartments.

actually, i forgot my main annoyance i had and the reason why i posted this thread in the first place.

i almost always drive with my window down. even if its cold, ill wind it down and put the heater on (the sweet and sour effect). if its hot, both fronts are down. i dunno why i do it, but i do it in every car i drive.

now the golf is THE MOST TURBULENT CAR i have ever driven!!! with just the driver window down, at around 60-80 kms, the noise from the air coming in is quite loud. with both windows down its twice as loud!!! no other car i've owned comes close to this noise with the windows down. and ive already lost more than the one piece of paper that wasnt held down with anything.

in a complete turn around my wifes honda accord euro is dead silent with drivers down, and with both fronts down its still very good.

i still love the car though, and no im not putting plastic strips on the windows!

oh yeah, the aircon in my VR6 is colder than in my mk5
