Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • GT Sport Ignition Barrel Change - HELP

Hey Team - I had the dreaded ignition key jam issue with the wifes' golf last few days (likely due to the numerous heavy things hanging off her key chain...). Anywho internals were shot so ordered a new (non genuine) mech assembly as factory was going to be 4-6 weeks away.
After much swearing drilling out the factory anti - tamper/theft bolts, I got the barrel assembly out, changed over the ignition key assembly, immobiliser and the switch on the back end of the barrel. Tested the mechanical side of things before going back in, all good and as advertised.

Put all back together (less swearing this time) , battery reconnected and now all I get is power to the MFD display, radio on and thats it. Key works fine in so much as it turns freely, but no other lights on dash when moving key past accessories position or cranking. Battery is charged and good to go. Car was running perfectly before the key issue.

I was advised that if I changed the ignition/key switch assembly that it should be fine (as the immobiliser is paired with the key etc), but after a short unhelpful phone call with local VW dealer they reckon it will need diagnostics etc etc.

I live on an island so getting to dealer will be a major PITA - any advice appreciated
Working...
