    • Hey guys,

Just a quick one about the flapper mod.

Can it be done on a Mk IV Gti?

And if so, is there a post on how to do it?

G'day mate and welcome. Unfortunately not. The GTI has a normal straight through exhaust with no flap or controlled restrictor present to keep the noise down. Also fitting a dual pipe exhaust similar to the R32s also seems to be a difficult exercise due to the rear suspension on the GTI.
        Cheers,

So there you have it...the GTI punters will just have to peddle a bit faster to make up for the lack of noise.

You can fix that problem, here's what I did to sort it out.

            • Brakes...

So it's opinion time party people...
My front brakes (rotors and pads) are due for replacement. I have several paths I'd like to go down plus I'm open to other ideas.

First up is pad replacement. I'm definitely going to go EBC for this. The following are my options:
              1. Greenstuffs all round.
              2. Redstuffs on front and Greenstuffs on the rear (EBC don't make a Redstuff rear pad).
According to the EBC website both are good for daily driving however red is a better option for higher powered and/or heavier cars, so I am looking at that option.

              Next is rotor replacement.
              1. OEM
              2. EBC Turbo Grooves all around (keeping equivalent rotor sizes)
              3. Other
VW Australia want stupid amounts of money for the OEM rotors so if I go that option I intend to bring the rotors in from the states at massive cost savings to me. Option two looks like it might have to be an import myself as well unless Guy can get them in somehow through the Aussie distributor as through Autobahn and my guess is the same distributor they said too hard. Otherwise I'm interested to hear any other options and the contact details on how to get them. Bare in mind though that I'm interested in a straight swap of rotors and not a full new calliper setup etc.

Finally I was looking at getting some nice and shiny Neuspeed braided brake lines and maybe a few other toys through Ian (Rennenhaus). I know they're really not necessary for most applications but I though why the hell not (unless someone can give me a reason not to get them).

So yeah an open floor people but please no negativity as has been seen in other threads about brakes. If you can provide legitimate reasoning/arguments not to go a certain product/path I am interested to hear it though.

              Cheers,
              Trent.

$700 is more than what VW want! Pretty steep for a non slotted or drilled rotor...

                  • I use EBC redstuff for street use and Pagid for when I have an event. As for the rotors I bought the OEM rotors from ECS tuning that have been slotted by ECS and got all four landed for the price that VW Australia wanted for one front rotor. I have had no issues with the rotors through two events and multiple track days with the Porsche club and I am quite happy with the performance of the EBC red stuff for the street with little brake dust and no squeal.

Edit: BTW they do make a redstuff for the rear it is just the S3 pad as i am using them in my car. Will try and locate the part numbers for you later on today when I get a chance

Excellent thanks Al for the rear part number. With regards to replacing pads to do you need to replace the wear sensor wires or anything when you swap?

The red stuff don't have a wear sensor so from what I understand Michael just joined the two wires together to complete the circuit so you don't get a warning light. According to Graeme you can also soft code it using Vagcom to turn the light off when using pads without a wear sensor.

I didn't change them myself as I always get Michael to do it when he is doing the prep on the car for an event.

                        Cheers Al

Thanks mate. Wasn't sure how the sensors worked.
                          Any other opinions out there?
Waiting now for US suppliers to get back to me on shipping for the EBC rotors.

                          • I'd go EBC.

From what i've been told by the EBC supplier i know, the reds aren't much good as a cold stop pad? He said that the reds are a little too hard for the street and not much good for cold stopping, and that greens are fine for the track, but obviously they wear faster being a softer compound..

Yeah the Redstuff US website is pretty good actually with their descriptions and ratings of the pads. The reds have the lowest dust by the sounds of it and yes they're cold bite isn't as good as the greens but from what I've red so far it's sufficient and not like the yellows which barely work at all from cold.
