Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

        • Man, absolutely top shelf. The engine bay looks schmick as, complete sleeper. Also the the guy videoing is doing a great job to hold the camera steady under boost. Oh and it sounds unreal you lucky bastard

God damn that is beautiful and perfect. Absolutely how i want mine to look like. If you didn't know much about cars you wouldn't even be able to tell. Basically looks OEM. Only weird thing is the engine cover haha

              • So Did some more work on the car this weekend. Car is now breathing much better with the addition of a full 3" exhaust system running two mufflers, a Magnaflow muffler as a mid muffler and a varex twin tip as the tail muffler. Its all a snug fit but it fits, the Magnaflow muffler is a 5x8 Oval muffler which fits perfectly in the trans tunnel (where the original round resonator fits) after i "massaged" it in along its length to allow some extra clearance for the tail shaft. One slight annoyance is that the exhaust still thumps the bottom of the car under hard 1'st to 2nd shifts. I gave it what i thought was plenty of clearance but apparently its not enough, Its not too bad however so i think i'll just live with it.

Gotta say the system as a whole is surprisingly quiet. About the same at idle and low revs and quieter at freeway speeds than my old 2.5" system (which had 2 resonators and 2 mufflers) and thats with the Varex open. When shut the exhaust is pretty much silent, easily as quiet if not quieter than the standard system! Loving the new found burble and thrummy R32 style note from the exhaust too

From a performance standpoint the car boosts much much quicker and harder now and is easily making more power, i'm guessing in the region of low 220-230 kwatw on ~12psi boost. Hopefully i can get it on the dyno soon, check AFR's and see if i can crack the 300kw mark with some more boost dialed in!

Big Thumbs up on Magnaflow mufflers then as i'd say a majority of the silencing is being done there as i've seen varex mufflers on other cars and they tend to be fairly loud.

One very frustrating and not so good thing i found this weekend though... DAMNN TIMING CHAIN COVER is leaking again!!!! Arghhhhh... Looks like i'll have to pull it off once again to re-seal it, this time i'll go chuck norris on it and give it a good dab of the best sealer i can get my hands on. Previously i used a gasket maker recommended by a mate, unfortunately its one of those never 100% sets things so i guess its worked its way out with heat and time. This has to be the biggest issue i've found so far with the whole conversion, sealing the timing chain cover which is made slightly difficult by the fact there are 4 surfaces that in essence need to be sealed.

Oh well... what can you do!

                Stay tuned, Dyno sheets soon...ish

                • awesome stuff mate!!!

in regards to the timing chain cover, I've heard on the grapevine that the VW genuine stuff works the best

p.s get some photos of the exhaust up!!!

                  • More bits done: Oil Catch can has been installed in behind the bumper to keep it out of the engine bay, windscreen washer bottle has been sorted and i've boked dyno time for this friday!

Couple pics of cooler routing and the catch can. Continuing my stealth trend the Catch can has been painted black, its grey in the photo as i've just alloy etch primed it. Sorry for the poor image quality!

                    • Nice build thread mate. Stealth and looks like it goes The only sealant to use on a VW Timing chain cover is the genuine VW stuff at $40+ a tube. Use that and you will never need do the job again.

I wasn't sold on the Angel eyes at first and was planning on not hooking them up but after some convincing decided i'd give it a shot. Can't say i was a fan of the idea at first but once i wired them and tried them out i'm actually kinda liking them. That said i'm not 100% sure i like the extra attention they grab especially when i'm going for the sleeper look so i'm undecided if i'll keep them wired up or not.

                          • Oh i also fitted these today Motor Mount Pair, Density Line, Mk4 VW VR6 - 034 MOTORSPORT In Track Density as per recommended by 034 motorsports. With them combined with my Super pro Track Polyurethane Dogbone my motor is very much fixed in place!

Was a relatively simple and quick process to swap them out which involved taking out two cooler pipes, battery + box and front bar.

Results - I now no longer feel the motor moving back and forth under hard changes or during on / off throttle motions and the exhaust no longer thumps on the chassis under firm shifts. NVH has certainly increased however at idle its not bad at all, the biggest area i've noticed it in is that i can hear a lot more harmonics etc from the motor when i'm accelerating. I can now hear even more turbo spool as well as my gearbox winding up through the gears (but not in a bad way) kind of makes the car feel more .... manly! I'm pretty happy to be honest and with the VR6 i dont think its really too intrusive. Should quieten down a bit too as they settle in. Much better than the rattle and shake my mates pulsar has with his poly mounts!

                            • Those lights look rather nice once installed. I wondered how they worked, might have to invest in some as the old stock ones are very very cloudy.

And back to the turbo build... did you ever consider getting a second motor and ECU? Do you know if it would be a simple matter of swap and go to put in another 2.8 or heaven forbid... a 3.2?

I am considering this option to keep a spare known good engine (the original) as mine is a daily driver like yours but I do intend to track it after the build so want to look at options for getting it back on the road should I get a little over zealous.

                              • I thought about it but to be honest i figure if something happens i'll cross that bridge when i get there. It'd either be a case of find a newish motor or rebuild this one so its tougher, all depends on how and what goes bang. It also wasn't a huge consideration as my car isn't daily driven as me and my partner have the Jetta which we both use as a combined daily as well as an old commodore as a backup just incase, not to mention my bike!

All that said if it did go bang i think the car would live in a shed for a very long time, i've spent more on it than i'd ever planned and dont have the money to shell out on a rebuild or new motor so i'm just going to touch wood it keeps running as well as it is now! (bar the oil leak i cant be bothered fixing... yet!)
