  • This is a couple of weeks old now but i'm looking at entering a few hillclimbs soon and i need a fire extinguisher mounted before i can enter. Since i'm looking at maybe getting a race dedicated hobby car down the track, i've wanted to avoid drilling holes in the golfs chassis if i can help it.
I visited one of my mums friends who's handy at fabricating stuff, and worked out a cool way to mount the fire extinguisher.

Basically by removing one of the rear seat bottoms, it left the seat mounts free for mounting the fire extinguisher with, and my mums friend made a mount up to fit, with a McGuyver interpretation of door locks.

I haven't had this scrutineered yet. I'm planning to see someone from the MG car club (who run the hillclimbs) about it. I'm hoping they will be happy with it though. Does anyone know what the cams rules are regarding to mounting these things?

    • CAMS schedule H is what you need to read

      must remain restrained under an acceleration of 25G;

must be capable of removal by the driver (or crew, where applicable) without the aid of tools.

Depends on the scrutinner but my guess looking at how it is mounted that it will fail the 25G rule due to the door locks but you never know your luck.

      • I put my carpet and interior bit back in today. It has been over a month since the 'flood' episode. It oh so nice to have a quiet car again.
I took the opportunity to clean the seat adjustment rails and re grease, easy seat adjustments now.

My pleasure glad I could help, this is how mine are mounted and I haven't had any issues passing scrutineering at any events. Just in front of each race seat bolted through the floor.

            • Picked up new front sway bar bushes and R32 rear control arm bushes, now I have to psych myself up to roll around on a cold garage floor to install them! Though the premise of no more squeaks over speed humps and no more knocking is pretty alluring......

                      • Dropped the R into Mike Webers for the following to be installed,

                        Sachs Clutch and Pressure plate
                        Peloquin Front Differential
                        Peloquin Rear Differential
Install Close Ratio Gears and new Input shaft (4th to 6th)
Replace all stock suspension bushings with Urethane performance ones
                        Replace faulty large radiator fan
New EBC Red Stuff (if needed) currently running EBC Redstuff for street and Pagid for track but the Pagid's will take to long to get heat into them on the ATC rally so sticking with the Redstuffs for this event.
New Motul RBF 600 brake fluid
                        48,000 km service
                        General prep for next event

Should get it back in two weeks, with a heap of pictures of the install of everything, I'll start a thread documenting the install of the gears, diffs and clutch if he takes enough pictures with my camera I left for him.

                        Cheers Al

                              • Cleaned the exhaust tips, wheels, mirrors, headlights and number plate covers as well as going over the car with a dust mit.
Kind of all clean and shiny.
