    • Does the nitrogen simply end up being a little lighter or does it help in some other way?

      • Its supposed to be more stable with regards to heat and pressure changes in the tyre.
They use it in commercial aircraft tyres as it is inert, in case of punctures.

As per what Gavin said. Also the nitrogen molecules are much bigger than normal oxygen/air molecules therefore it escapes from the tyre much slower and you don't need to top up your pressures as often.

            • That sounds pretty beneficial. What does Jax charge for the nitrogen inflation?

$7 a tyre. Not sure how much they charge for a top up.

                        • Nitrogen is used in aircraft tyres because they suffer extremes of temperature in a very short period of time - if you put a plane weighing 100s of tonnes onto the ground at 300km/h, and the tyres go from cold (the plane's been up at 30,000') to hot very quickly, and the lower level of expansion in the tyres is VERY useful in that instance.

I'm pretty sure the lower migration rate through the tyre is a myth - regular air is something around 78% nitrogen gas anyway.

Most places that charge you for nitrogen will do free checks/refills (which is only fair since you have to pay for it to start with, and you can't go top up for free at a service station).

Just remember - anyone selling Nitrogen for tyres is going to tell you that it's good, since they stand to make money out of it!
                          Nothing to see here...
