    MY MK4 BUILD

    Comment

    • Over the last two weeks, I had Jimmy (Jmac) from Alba European revitalise my mk4 Golf GTI.
He was meticulous with checking all pipes/lines for damage and went above and beyond fixing extra things.

      - New k03s turbo
      - vr6/g60 clutch flywheel with redline oil
      - New engine and transmission mounts
      - New rocker cover gasket and timing chain tensioner gasket w/ half moon seal
      - various pipes and wires were replaced/repaired.

His knowledge and expertise is excellent and if anyone in the Brisbane area (especially southside/gold coast) is in need of quality repairs, I highly recommend him.

In regards to my old k03 turbo, 2 of the 12 fins were slightly bent which was the cause of the howling noise on boost.

Dad mode on <<< hope this isn't for you, is one project not enough? >>> dad mode off.

Timing chains, brakes, bushes, without a massive load of receipts you can bet that it'll need money spending on it.

                • Well lads... Here are my impressions. (Keep in mind I don't know what a new dealer delivered mk4 gti feels like so I have no comparison!)

Does the engine feel new... mmmm not 100%. The whole engine feels alot tighter but there is still a feeling of unrefinement. The feeling that the car has indeed done 190k. Don't get me wrong, the power delivery is great!

The reason I changed the mounts, was because I had this annoying jolting/rocking sensation when I went on/off acceleration. I couldn't afford the 034 motorsport mounts ($350), So i replaced with OEM parts ($90). The engine is a lot tighter. When I start up the car, it feels like new. However, the slight jolt/rock is still there *a little bit* when i go off and on acceleration. But I am happy that its minimised the problem from being 'annoyingly noticeable' to 'doesn't really bother me'.

As for power delivery, I have no idea about how much compression my engine has lost over the years as well. However, the loss of compression will be masked by the increased power the engine is now making. I am running a k03 CC tune on my k03s. Keep in mind Im under strict instructions to not strap my car for about 400km as to bed in the new clutch. But the car is very fun to drive at half throttle up to 4000rpm.

Jmac was telling me possible scenarios but he is not 100%.

I always run OEM VW air filters, so I doubt something would have entered via the filter. He was saying maybe a piece of silicone came off the turbo inlet pipe.

My oil lines and pickup were all super clean, but Jmac was saying it may have lost a little oil pressure, causing fins to hit turbo housing.

Maybe the bearing had a retard moment and allowed the fins to touch turbo housing.

Turbo had very little to no play side to side and up and down.

Ill post up a picture tonight.

                      • ^that is nasty! Have you checked the prv valve (hockey puck) to see if that may have failed internally and a piece got sucked in? Continuing on with carnage pics, is discovered I need new engine mounts today

                        • What is this prv valve you speak of?

With the power your putting down, surely you will order some 034motorsport track density mounts? Or similar?

These were the 034 ones, I'll be ordering VF ones next. The PRV valve is the plastic round thing plugged into your tip next to the dv. It's part of the pcv system

Oh lawd...i would have thought the 034 mounts would have lasted.

I'll check the prv on my car, even thou I'm pretty sure Jmac would have been all over it if it was damaged.

                              • so I did the impossible yesterday and changed my timing belt, tensioner, pulley and water pump..
had the upper timing cover not want to slide off then 1 of the crank pulley bolts round out on me and then the belt wouldn't play ball and fit over the water pump pulley..
in the end I got it all sorted and am flushing the cooling system again today before I add in the new G12 red coolant and an oil and filter change.
thanks to Gav(h100vw) for getting the parts for me and for lending a couple of tools to help in the final stages (M8 spline drive fits nicely in a rounded 6mm allen bolt when delivered with a hammer)
