They don't need new pistons mate. The std ones are good for lots of hp. Seriously headgaskets don't just die, the worst someone could do is run it with some non-VW coolant.
If anything did quit on you, it can all be done with the engine in, except a crank/main bearing replacement.

I wouldn't be going any more than a FT like the one on my Polo.
If that's the way you want to go, PM Lito about his old ECU and flog your Oettinger one. He has some S3 injectors that you need as well. You'll have to do without cruise control but it'll save you $1000ish on a tune for it.

my car battery was flat to the point of not letting me unlock the car!
lucky the drivers door was unlocked for some reason?
anyway, Once i managed to crawl into the boot to get the jumper leads I realised id left the car aired out so no rolling it anywhere
managed to get the 6n close enough to get the leads on it, phew!

The beautiful thing about my GTR was that the battery is in the boot with terminals in the bay also. It didn't matter which way you parked, you could jump it. More cars should have this.
