Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk3 R32 v2

This is for those who don't know, are sick of reading threads on plastidip and just want to kill some time. Enjoy.

It all started a few months back when i was fed up with vag cars and couldn't wait to leave it all behind. Then a cheap R32 motor came up for sale and thought F@!k IT. Let's do it again properly this time.

So picked up the motor one day after an all nighter at work.

And from there began hoarding parts/looking for an acceptable donor car. The guidelines for the donor were minimal doors, amd cheap as possible. After looking at a few overpriced examples and ones that needed painting too this one popped up at a reasonable price.

Having a heap on for the next few weekends i was nervous i wouldn't be able to secure the car. Sent a deposit and dude was happy to wait a few weeks till i could get it.

After a few months of collecting bits and pieces and working out what route i was going to take. Things have started to make a progression.

Stripped interior, removed most of the sound deadening, sanded and rust converted the floor, carpets back in and vr6 seats in.

I've always wanted these jahre belts and i could never justify the cost but a set came up cheap ish so jumped on them. Along with the Handbrake too.

The important stuff could start this week with the arrival of these baddies

    272/264 cam's.
Armed with a box full of goodies from ecs plus some other things i started messing around pulling down the 12v for the necessary parts to make the 24v work in the mk3 bay.

The motor is getting new chains and guides, 550cc injectors, the camshafts, 90A alternator from the 1.8cl, 12v cooling system(crack pipe, thermo housing with low temp thermo, all coolant lines) IE egr delete and whatever else i have forgot to mention.

This thread will be scattered and half missing as i wasn't intending to make one.

    The specs of the motor:
    Mk5 R32.
    93,000km's
Standard internally except schrick 272/264 cams
    Nissan q45 throttle body
    Bosch 550cc squirters
Mk4 fuel rail and intake manifold
    1.8L alternator
    12v VR6 coolant system.
    IE egr delete
    Megasquirt 3x ECU
    Best of all

It will be copping a 75 shot of spray.
    2.25" downpipes and 3" exhaust.
    Walbro 255lph in tank pump.

The car itself will be nothing special, prothane poly kit front to back, some sort of coilovers, retain power steering this time around hopefully still keep a/c off it.

Driveshaft shop stage 3 shafts will take the power from the Peloquin LSD, 3.94r&p'd 02a from my vr6 into the 4 lug 9.4" brakes (13" drag slicks up front)

There will be all kinds of things i will miss that i will drop in to this thread later on. And will continue to update as things go along.

      Monster!
Where do you go for the Q45 throttle body?
Is that a bolt-on affair or will you need adapters?

        Will be using an adapter.

It can be mounted without one, however due to the r32 intake manifold design it won't have the best seal in the world. Plus with the adapter I can bore out the manifold to have a smooth taper.

So good! When do you reckon it will be ready for its first run?

Only lengthy process left is the wiring loom.

Had the cliftronix lend a hand yesterday to seal up motor and have it ready.

Went to spin by hand before putting covers on. Got 1" then locked up.

Figured something had slipped with timing. So started pulling back down to reset bottom end.

No frigging clue how this happened. Apparently the vvt gears don't really need the 3.

Options are machine off run vvt, hope for best. Or to get vvt delete cam gears so oil pressure is not an issue.

Currently having the cams machined true again.

Purchased these adjustable cam gears from schimmel as well as a water pump.

Also got a Neuspeed power pulley for pennies.

Set up the mechanical side of the Nitrous system for now. Bit all over the place but best i can do without getting more braided line made. Will be pretty unseen once there is a 3.5" intake pipe.

Walbro 255lph in tank. Snug and secure. Got it mounted low enough it should have no issues with low fuel pickup.
Just need to get a pump filter as i gave mine to a mate.

                              Wow I'm lazy.

So in 10 months I've done sweet F all.

After 3 or 4 attempted brake combo's up front I finally got it sorted. Switch to vented 256mm fronts with ebc yellow pads and switched rear to disc with mk4 alloy calipers and ebc ultimax pads. Braided lines all around.

Koni adjustables/eibach springs in front and bilstein/neuspeed springs in back for now with poly bushings.

Poly front/R32 rear control arm bushings and new ball joints

                              Powerflex 'black' steering rack bushing

Due to cock around with 24v loom, I'm putting a 12v back in it for the interim.

                              Dodgy sri manifold

VWMS/Gemini LSD with titanium drive flanges, put in a .71 5th gear so i can do some long highway if need be too.

                              Competition clutch flywheel 9.75lb

Competition clutch kit (way overkill but cheap)

TT276 camshafts, autotech hd springs new headgasket, stem seals and new timing chain kit (later style)

Schimmel bosch 040 pump adapter to sit intank. I couldn't get the walbro to sit low enough for my liking, plus this will have the headroom for anything in the future.
The 040 will be feeding ethanol to these bad boys. ID1000's

The last few days I've been spliting the existing headlight/rad loom from the 1.8 motor loom. (Late body, early motor loom) will be using my old Megasquirt 3x ecu so have to join a few wires to make looms compatible. (Headlight power)

This was a bit of fun with the looms intertwined and electrical taped together. I'm using 2x12" slim fan's, with a custom made shroud on an Alloy rad from a local shop. So ditching the fcm and bulky wiring associated with the rad fans.
