Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Another VR6 idle question

Hey guys, Just after a few ideas regarding a 94 VR6 (so assuming obd1).

The idle is rough when starting, jumping about which ive read is a normal thing, it jumps up as high as 1300 and drops super low, also frequently shutting off. This is mostly when starting, but regardless of warm or cold (although obviously more prominent in the mornings/when cold). So far Ive fixed a few things, and theres a few more to go, but would any of these have affected it?
First, The breather box off the ISV was missing, but recently replaced that and cleaned out the ISV, which was pretty filthy.
Then the fuse for "engine elektroniks" was blown, so replaced that, but it didn't seem to change much which I thought was strange
The coolant hoses were replaced recently, but the hoses to the throttle body were not attatched, could this affect idle stability?
The coolant is also quite low, would this affect the idle in any way? I noticed that once the thermostat opened it seemed to idle steadily on 850ish-rpm

In short - what the **** can I do to fix my idle!
Don't suggest a vag scanner unless you've got one that you want to use on this car
Any help or suggestions much appreciated

Look for vacuum leaks, trace the big black line from the brake booster around the engine bay, and the lines that branch off it.

Look for cracks in the plastic joins, and for split or disconnected hoses.

These are my engine revs from starting the engine until I started moving.
After some distance my idle speeds while waiting at lights are 760-800 rpm.
These values are data logged using a reader and my laptop.

Hope this data can be of use to you in any way. I might add that I get engine code:
          00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40) 30-10 - Open or Short to B+ - Intermittent

Not sure if that's serious but it seems I'm getting similar high idle as you.

Hmm yeah that seems normal for idle, it seems to rev more and then calm down to a decent level. The TPS and ISV have recently been fixed so I'm assuming they are okay. I checked for vac leaks but couldn't find any. Is it possible the coolant temp sensor can play a part here? I've read a few places that it can affect idle :/

              Yeah, it's possible.

A scan may reveal more with that, however.

I really need to get mine scanned...

Not only does it idle rough but the mileage per tank is crap with mine - only getting 350km's max per tank and it's all highway driving at 110

Yea but if you wanted good fuel economy a vr swap isn't the right way to do it haha. Tomorrow I'll check the voltage to the coolant temp sensor and scan for codes
