Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

There is 3 things you need to change all in one hit !!
They sort of rely on one another.
All I remember rite now is the blue sensor, can't think of the other 2 rite now.
Buy genuine and not second hand !
I'm sure it's not that expensive from the dealer.
And the fuses blowing, seems like you've got bad wiring/grounding/faulty component somewhere.

So from a few forums I found that there is a clip under the back seat which you plug into the scan port which will flash out codes using the check engine light on the dash. They also said if there wasn't the connector under the seat, that you can just use a wire or clip of any kind and bridge the 4th and 15th pin hole.
Super strange instructions, it said turn the car to "on" then insert the pin for 2.5 seconds.... :S but regardless, it wouldn't flash out the codes. Has anyone heard of this method before? does it work? I know it works in Hondas, so I figure itd be somewhat similar in the VW

So got no where today, but ill keep this updated when we find the solution

Used this method on my mr2, linked two ports with a paper clip. Then the cel would flash a sequence to indicate numbers.

Problem is. I don't think obd1 has an engine light

Holy **** I've never heard or seen of something so dodgy!
Just take it to your local dealer and tell them the car is running really badly and your just after a quick an simple engine scan. I did this once a few years back at the chatswood dealer, and they did it for free.
MAF and coolant temp sensor are 2, I still can't remember the 3rd, it'll kick in soon though

Strange, my civic is obd1 and it flashes out codes. I didn't really want to take it to a shop because they always wanna charge, I'll give it a go though. It's more not having the time.

              Would the third be coilpacks?

I think I read on the 'tex about bad coolant temp sensors having something to do with rough idle too.

MAF, blue coolant temp sensor, 02sensor
Oh and g13's crap, me and a few others had heating issues when we switched to this stuff, get castrol etc
Oh and if your other half has no performance plans for the car for the next 2 or more years, I'd just get it over with and just replace all 3, as which ever part u don't replace, will most likely give u more problems later!
These parts last a long time plus it'll restore your pulling power & fuel economy!!

I've been having a little bit of a idle problem myself, I've changed a shiit load of stuff, except for those three, so I got a quote yesterday
                  $45 for temp sensor
                  $270 for MAF
                  $330 for 02 sensor

The 02 sensor u can prob get from one of these bulk sellers, hsy etc
AFI (Australian fuel Injection) is a bosch distributor.

Mmmm u might wanna get the scan done first, u never know it might tell u the other faults too!
Alternatively I'll be at the Downshift show on Sunday, I've got a vcds scanner I can keep with me

May I ask who quoted you that much for an o2 sensor?!!! I'm taking mine to the mechanic on Friday for a few things but geeez, when the part only costs $30 that seems a bit steep

O2 sensor should cost you more than 30 bucks.... I learnt the hard way that cheap ebay ones just don't cut the mustard. Spend around 110 on a decent one from the UK or the walker ones from USA on ebay and you'll have a good, responsive O2 signal.

The ones from GAP are under $50 and they sell OEM gear but eh, if that's what it costs for quality then so be it.

Dude GAP is full of sh*t, 3/4 of the stuff they sell is rubbish, just like max I learnt the hard way.
I don't buy or recommend them.

Also there are a list of sensors that should only be bought from the stealership !!
Anything else and your probably wasting money an time.

I picked up some stuff from AFI today. I got told the bosch 02 sensor is $95 from them.
They had some trouble finding the rite one, so best u have your vin/engine No. on you.

yeah o2 sensors aren't cheap, ive got one on the way and will do the coolant temp sensor soon aswell, its not in too bad a spot.

The dash actually has the words IN O2, which I assume is the o2 sensor fault, have been meaning to get one for a while.

Currently aching from changing front control arms, its a tight fit!

KKK VR6 - where are you getting the sensor from? $45 is pretty good!
Thanks for the offer, I was planning to go, but a friend just opened up a workshop and he is having a meet, so itll have to wait. (on another note, he has a snap on scanner, so could probably use that), but thank you regardless, very kind

Oops all 3 parts I got quoted from my local dealer.
                              IN02 is a service reminder.
Yeh the snap on one should work.
Clear codes first then replace parts.
Don't drive the car once you've cleared the codes, replace the parts straight after.
