Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • stefcio007's '96 MK3 VR6 [build thread]

    Hi,
I'm new to this forum and would like to share what I've got.
A few weeks back I picked up a '96 VR6. Previous owner took good care of it. This thing has been serviced every 15k km (according to the log book).
    This is my first car.
The paint was in excellent condition and I fell in love with it. Two of the tires were just replaced (by previous owner) and the other two are in very good nick. Cruise control doesn't work, but not fussed. Rear windscreen wiper jet is missing it's directional cap and shoots a jet of water straight out the back (like in James Bond movies? haha).
The interior was tidy and the roof (interior) looks brand new.
A/C works superbly and heating is a sauna. I love how much tech is packed into a car this age, I'm surprised!

This area it's quite common to get damage so leaving ample space is a must, plus I was in a hurry.

Things that came up after owning it.
Rear window would mysteriously be open at random. I tried opening it. Wouldn't go back up. It would seem to drop the window. For a few weeks I would every now and then close it manually by hand. This was an issue and a bit awkward.
Having only just bought the car I needed to fix this myself. Decided a plank of wood to hold up the window would be the way to go.

hey, it worked, and that's what mattered! Winter is coming so won't need to open the window anyway.

Next up, replace the stereo with something more modern. Yes, it has the stock stereo still in there!

Here we have the wiring spaghetti.
Wiring diagrams didn't really help. It was a case of cutting the cables, seeing which speaker stopped working and wiring that up to the new plug.

And here we are! At this point there was no antenna hookup. Bought adapter off eBay and it now works.

The Japanese stock speakers are very decent and I probably won't replace them.

Looks super clean! Red is the best colour for them imo. If you wanna get the cruise fixed, send your module to Max on here (mb1907953) and he can repair it for $40

Auto. I needed my license quickly. Taking an hour to walk home after work sucked.

Ah okay! They're hard to find in good nick.
Keep an eye on that gearbox man, should be sweet if it's been serviced religiously but they can act up something chronic. Just something to keep in mind.

Enjoy that heater while it lasts.

Auto vr6 is the best daily combo.

Haha, if it breaks then I'll just buy a jumper!
                    It's a very nice drive.

I've decided to install a small sub in the boot. It's one from a Logitech Z506.
Don't really want a big sub, just some extra bass.
Bypassing the internal power supply and connecting it to ignition power. I know it can run off 12V, so it shouldn't be a problem, plus I have some leftover speakers. The HU has RCA sub outs and the unit has RCA ins.

Bypassed the internal 240V->12V PSU so that I can just run straight 12V to it. Now I have a power cable coming out of this unit that accepts 12V. Tried it with some spare 12V lead acids lying around. Worked! Some small mods needed to the sub controller and we should be good to go.

This is a brilliant idea... keen to see how it goes. Alternatively you can go the slim sub route that I went with. Works pretty well, just needs fine tuning to stop the rear seats from vibrating.
