He means if the car is properly and regularly serviced, the timing chains can last for 400k kms. VW state the chains will last the life of the engine, but this tends not to be the case due to brittle plastic guides.
Is that video from cold start or with the engine warmed up? I have a similar noise to that when cold but goes when warmed up.
It's also normal that the idle is a bit higher when cold, approx 1000-1100 rpm, before dropping to around 680 rpm.
The Timing chain is located at the other end of the engine to where you were filming, wait until you've had new coil/leads installed, also ensure good clean oil before further investigation.
If you're really suspect on the chains, have the sump removed and check the contents for plastic when doing an oil change.
It may also be worth removing the rocker cover and checking for any slack on the chain (note you may want to have the cover gasket replaced at the same time)
Just my opinion, hope it helps

Thanks for the info SpeciP3, ill defs look into that. The vid was from a cold start (kinda, was cold ran it to coles, and back to my place, 6k round trip). I want to get all these age issues sorted then looking into renewing the engine and getting more power out of it.

Thanks again for all you input greatly appreciated.

if you are looking at getting the motor recond don't worry about the chain utill then, save lots on labour as the chain would need to come off in an engine recon anyway

????????? Why recon an engine at 191000 ks its just run in.Do it when its worn out or do you just like wasting money.
2v vr6 engines are basically at their peak standard don't waste your money unless you fit a supercharger.

            Lol !

Put another clip up, but on the passenger side. I dought your chains need to be changed.
When I was in the market to buy a vr6, I had never heard a vr that needed a timing chain replacement, but 1 day I went to check this one out, and the second I lifted the bonnet up I could just tell the chain were on there way out !
THERES A DEFINITE Distinction when your chains go shiit !
It's sorta like a grinding & rattling noise and the engine overall gets quite noisy.

Sorry for the late reply all,

First off thanks so much KKK VR6 & Stanton greatly appreciate this:

Vr6 timing chain idle - YouTube

While filming this I noticed that its starting to idle rough now after she has warmed up, she is idling at the 680 700rpm mark but like there is a lumpy cam installed. When I pull away its ok, but when the car is idling that roughness comes back. Hopefully getting my sparks and leads soon.

@Stanton, well a supercharger is what im looking into. Im going to be giving the guys at duggan balancing a call to find out more along the lines of what needs to be done prep wise.

That aint high mate. Mine is on 292k and still going strong. Theres a few on this forum that have hit 300k and are still going fine. The VR6 is a very well built donk. They arent anything like japanese motors which would be very near the end of their lives at 191k.

Thanks so much Matty, that puts me at ease a bit more, and thanks to everyone on the forum for all the tips. Because of that the VR6 is running much better and now im not scared to open it up!

Finally got myself a VR6 (but not accelerating right)

Hey all, noticed that I have hesitation when accelerating hard. If I give it the beans it's like she won't go, but if I pull it back, only push down half way or gradually increase the acceleration then she goes.

I've been doing reading on here and the net and found that I can check relays(167), fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter and fuel pump. I'm going to be getting stuck into this tomorrow, but I was hoping someone could tell me more about the fuel pressure regulator testing?

From what I read I have to unplug the vacuum side piping and see if there is any fuel in that side. What I need to know is there any pre work that I need to do? Does the car need to be running do I have to remove the number 28 fuse?

Could be all of the above stated mate.
Give it a full service first (oil, plugs, leads, filters.) Also check the MAF and 02 sensors (VCDS program test or VW workshop). Another thing could be the coil pack (recommend you replace with MSD ignition).
I have also found that giving the fuel pump electrics a decent clean also help.

Finally got myself a VR6 (but not accelerating right)

A quick update and some pics,

Thanks allot for all the input guys, greatly appreciated. I started with cleaning the intake boot and the MAF and it has helped.

You can see all the oil in it from the PCV system, I think.

I also bought a new set of leads and plugs, as I still have the factory leads and I wouldn't be surprised if the macky who worked on my car didn't change the plugs.

I'm gonna be changing them all this weekend (don't have all my tools on me, at the parentals place).

I also got a set of Coilovers thanks to Robin, and I am looking forward to fitting it this weekend.

I wanted to ask has anyone got any pointers for me? Is the installation a straight forward swap? Or is there other parts I should purchase or consider changing?

                              Thanks guys

My fuel pump relay is also running hot like don't touch or it will take the skin off your fingers, that can't be right? My ECU relay is also heating up not as hot but up there. Is this normal?
