peoples thoughts on leaving it there if I get longer bolts?
cant see it would hurt a gasket in there other then the pickup being a touch higher off the bottom of the sump

I think because the gasket thickness added to the thickness of the mk5 sump means the bboltsare only just touching thread then when I'm torquing it up the first thread is letting go. So longer bolts should mean will thread up properly
Me adding the gasket was like putting a spacer behind a wheel and running stock length boltsLast edited by dylan8; 02-07-2015, 01:36 PM.

Hahaha I was going to draw it. Thought it would make sense to most people here explaining it like that. Will hopefully get some new bolts. So keen to get this pos driving again

Well it's either longer bolts or gasket out. Don't need to do both.
I'm thinking I'm going to give it a go with longer bolts and gasket. Can't see any harm in the gasket being there other then the pickup not been right at the bottom of the sump. At worst I waste 3$ on bolts. Would much rather do that then scrape all the sealant off and clean everything again

Would also mean you've upped the amount of oil the motor can take (though it would only be a few mL). Not a bad thing!

yeah ~5mm for the gasket over the sump area shouldn't be a whole heap, plus it wont hurt having more as you said.
picked up longer bolts for the sump this morning.
my new valve steam seals arrived yesterday, but freaking out about installing them. would be so much more comfortable with the head off. bit worried about making each piston TDC and without even looking im thinking its going to be a pain turning the engine with it in the car

R32 sump back off.
found out I needed to drill the baffles also to clear the dipstick.
gasket off
resealed, seems to be holding oil 1 week on. will see once it gets some heat into it
fuse box is half back in.
Gear box brace back in after doing some cutting.
valve steam seals and itll be good to go for roady and rego.
