Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Well actually... I took the shifter apart and found some more haha.

I've seen it done before. Just extra mucking around and measuring I suppose.
That's the plan. I've avoided cutting tabs, drilling the two holes. Just need to trim the opening so I can access reverse.
Dunno why they go so nuts with the cutting. Much rather cut up a removable part then the chassis.

Cheers! No what I was originally after, but they will do the trick til I get my hands on another set from the long list of tails I want for it

        • Shifter in. Feels good so far. Want to take it for a spin but need to refit the heat shields and exhaust. Also fit the new reverse sensor plug

          • nice work man, easy mod then? still dubious as to just how much of a difference it makes :p will have to take a mk4 for a spin some time....

            • I got away with just trimming the tunnel opening near reverse.
Didn't cut any tabs, didn't drill any holes in the body. So pretty stocked on that.

Huge difference. The later the mk4 the better too from what I've read. Plus better for short shifter kits if you are that way inclined.
Every mk3 I've driven feels so sloppy compared to this and all mk4s I've driven

Now I need to find a shifter with a mk4 knob and mk3 boot or do something a bit different there too

                • Think I have a leather mk3 boot in very good nick. I'll bring it down to GAD for ya. What I used with this setup but you'll still need a knob.

                  • That'd be awesome. I've got a old woodgrain mk4 knob somewhere. I'll just run that til my new steering wheel arrives.
Might have a go at machining my own up

                    • I'll have to check and dig it out. Throw it in with the glovebox for gad trip. Remind me about that!

                          • Much better feel. Mk3 is like trying to drive a stick through a bag of dirty washing.
We are so doing it to your mk3

                            • Was going to take it for a spin today as it was last day on permit, a split over flow bottle cap stopped that.
Thanks to Dean for the hook up!

Went around the block with the mk4 shifter, wow! So much better, even with the knob just perched on top not screwed down.
Do have a mad s/c whine since, guess caused by heat shield or something rubbing when foot is to the floor.

Now for mk4 rear brakes, shifter adjustment (still can't get 5th), and sort the brake pedal sticking just a touch causing the lights to stay on sometimes
