  • 8v vs 16v

    Hi All,

Trying to learn a little more about our golfs. I've seen it said a few times here and there 8v and 16v (I'm assuming v=valves). But what does it actually mean, what are the differences, and which cars have what?

I have searched, and cannot find any definitive answer.

    Cheers,
    Eric.

16v is a twin cam motor that delivers more power, basically via greater air flow than an 8v
They are much more common in the US & europe. They were only sold here in Seats & there are not to many of those floating around
Most of them were made to suit mk2 golfs, corrado, scirrocos & early model passats that never came to Aus except in private imports. So they have become a mythological ledgend
The seat toledo & ibiza(basically a mk3 golf) has a ABF 2L 16v which is was a later more developed version that runs on EFI compared to the old fashioned k-jet mechanical fuel injection & has about 10kw more power in standard form than the older versions

      Mate,

Awesome answer. It makes sense that its double overhead cam on the 16v then?

That pretty much answers my question.
      Thanks.

Maybe we could get a model specific info sheet sticky thread for each of the models of VW catagorised. ie. engine and trim specifications, special models, etc
