  • As you might tell from the happy bananas, the car is running! Really amazed at the power of the abf, kick ass acceleration and pretty awesome torque. Still a few bits to sort like a turbo diesel air box to replace the pod pipe set up as well as tidy up a few small bits and paint some pieces but I'm just happy its going now! Had some troubles with ecu not being de immobilized and crank sensor. Once they were sorted it fired right up!

Also got some new wheel today! BBS RS! 16x8 and 8.5 with factory slant lips and half height caps. They have already been re drilled to 4x100 so just need a nice clean up.

Front 16x8s will sit spot on. Rears will have a 10mm space and be prefect.
Also on the look out for some Mk3 gti recaros to get re-trimmed in the factory grey leather and to fix up the annoying dents on the car!

    Progress
    whatcha think?

    • Yhe Jetta is looking sweet, but prefer the alloys that you have on at the moment to the ones you have just bought...sorry,just saying and being honest.

          • awesome duncan.

good work on the swap. I can't wait to start playing with my ABF toledo. I havn't driven it much, but the short distance I did drive it really made an impression.

Looking forward to the RS's, should be ace.s

              • Get a video of it running man.

Bbs are gonna be mad! What are you gonna be doing with the steels?

                • I will once the exhaust is sorted, has heaps of leaks and sounds horrible!

Going to keep the steel wheels as winters for it. I'll also keep the D90s probably, find something for them one day!
I found some old snaps of it so thought i'd share them too..

                  • Fuel return fitting finally turned up from Germany after a 3 week wait! Car is going well but the old factory gave up the ghost last night.

It's booked in to get a new exhaust this week. Just a 2.25" pipe, long coby resonator and simple back box. Need to get the O2 sensor also put in. Seems to run sweet with out it but it will be good to get it in.

Also found a Mk2 GTD air box to replace the pod set up. I think this is a smaller one from an early turbo diesel?

It fits in ok but is a little low and narrow. I'm going to keep looking for a later model GTD air box like this

Anyone know of an air box like this for sale??

                    • Great work Duncan. I'm really enjoying this build because you have documented and posted pictures for all to see, as well as being able to share the experience along the way with us all.

                      Those BBS are HAAAWWTTT

                      Keep it up!

                      • I think that airbox may be similar to a corrado/B3 passat model.

iirc, a Corrado VR6 airbox is a popular item for a mk 2 VR6 swap.

                        • Oh really? I thought they were a lot different? I'll have an investigate.

Today I got a warrant for the Jetta (what engine swap haha!) and then gave it good work out on a day trip to Piha and Karekare (West coast of the North Island in New Zealand) to do a few small tramps with my girlfriend.

The ABF went great up and down the hills! Pulls so well through all the gears. The new bushers makes a huge difference in handling and the bigger 256mm brembos make it stop!
Temperature stayed perfect the whole time too. Really happy with the swap.

Looking forward to an awesome Summer in New Zealand!

                          Thanks!
