German Cats have far more precious metals in than domestically made cars and are better made.
You could just shake all the loose matter out of your one and put it back.
The dream score for a Mk2 is a 2L Toledo downpipe, which has the same downpipe as a Mk3 and a built in Cat, that is better and bigger than Mk2.
I reckon the Mk3 brake setup is the grouse for a Mk2.
Good to see you are into it.

Yea I do now Pete. and Geez, what a heavy bugger of a thing they are!
Went for a spin and got the brakes up to temp to burn all the smudge marks and crap off them. They work nice now! I'll have to rebleed though, not 100% happy with them yet.
Cheers for that info Matt. I'll keep that in mind.
I've bought some stuff of GAP, just some maintainance parts, and when they arrive, I'll do a service & give it a tune up.
What cam's do these engines come with?
I'm thinking about getting a bigger throttle body, UKspec Cam (or something a bit better, but still mild) and maybe a UK ECU, all to go along with the 2" exhaust, mk 3 downpipe and K&N filter (and swiss cheese the air box??)
I'm also looking on ECS tuning, koni yellow sport front shocks are 170US. I'm just waiting on a shipping quote before I go ahead and order them (most probably atleast). The FK's are about 140US, but I'm not sure about FK's.
Is your cam hydro or solid lifters? I've got a 268° hydro cam you might like to try out. I've also got a MK4 ABA cam that might be interesting too (also hydro)
Not sure yet Ben. There wont be a big showing of Vics at Nats this year. But if nothing comes up (uni wise) I'd like to come up. Have to see closer to the date.
Also have got a great price for some koni yellow's from ECS, which i'll order soon (pay day)
Looks like I might need another radiator, mine leaking. I think Jon had a spare though.

Yeah I will look into Koni Yellows. I don't know if keeping the original springs will not match the new shocks. Buy I imagine putting new springs on will raise the car up considering the original spring have been on there for 20 years and would have sagged.
I saw these though, supposed OEM shock replacements.
I do agree the springs would have sagged a bit, but not significantly enough to really affect the ride height I dont think. I've got Zender springs I think, at a quick guess, they'd be about a 40mm drop. should suit the koni's well I'd imagine.
I'm going the koni's cause I' want the adjustability for when I hit the track. And I've also driven a mk 3 with koni's and I was pretty impressed. On the softest setting it provides a nice 'sporting' ride. Defiantly firmer than stock, (I imagine, having not driven a perfect stock car) but not so much that your nannas denchers fall out. I also found the koni's to be MUCH MUCH cheaper than from ECS than a local distributor. FK's are cheaper, if it comes down to the bottom dollar, and still provide adjustability.
The sachs ones will be OEM, and will make it ride like new. just depends on wether you want to return to factory specs, or improve a bit.
Other news, I recieved my order from GAP today. Looks like I'll have to get a few more parts, and then get stuck into a major service and maintainance!
Also: Do mk 2 GTI's come standard with a rear sway bar??
EDIT:
a quick look on GAP shows a slightly larger range.
