The 15x7 et13 I'm running rub in the rear fairly consistently. Just a word of warning if you plan in keeping stock guards

Oh whoops there's a brain fart on my part. Of course et13 would poke more than et28. My mistake

165 is very narrow, especially on a 7 inch rim. Not recommended for daily use because it requires a fair bit of stretch to seal properly.
Normal tyre size is 195x50x15 so you can go 185 or 45 profile if you need more clearance.1978 MK1 2.0 16v http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...-46488-70.html

195/45 is perfect on 15x7 imo. Anything smaller is just for scene points and it sounds like that's not what you'll be going for.
Plus, you'll need as much tyre area as you can get to allow all that power to get to the road.
On stock tyre size (175/70r13), my STD 1.8 8v was spinning the wheels in the first 3 gears. Just sayin77 Mk1 GLS 2 door - That sinking feeling
