Just do it. Btw they ride very well, suspension is a little more refined to std mk1 with front and rear sways as standard.

Not sure to be honest Paul, This one doesn't have any sway bars. But with the coils handles ok. I'm going to take it up to the mountains for a cruise when the weather gets better and give it a push, see how it holds up! I'd imagine the stiffer chassis would be great.

          Engine however........ Is gutless!!!!

This reminds me the weekend i put coilovers into my 1.6 4 door, took it for a mountain run and was brilliant fun even without lots of power because you can just have your foot flat around corners. Lucky our cars are also light weight!

Very excited to get my 2 door on the road, Im probably going to plan a road trip down to Sydney, mountain runs along the way will be fun as, than go visit Zen Garage.

              NO SAWYS???
My bad, I had the impression that all cabbys came out with sway bars? Anyways all the ones I've seen have had them. George does yours have karmen badges on the guards?

I know they all handle great with a bit of tweaking but how rough (noise/vibration/harshness) are they compared to a MK1?

My MK2 is my daily ride and I do 900 ks a week. It's got really stiff coilovers so the ride can be a bit bone jaring but everyone says MK2's are heaps better than MK1's for ride quality. It's been over 10 years since I had my last MK1 (1983 white GTI which went to Tassie) and I can't remember how rough it was to drive. If I get another MK1 it has to be a bit refined if I'm going to be spending 2 hours per day driving it on country roads.

It has to be reasonably quiet, no rattles and with a good heater. I don't care how hard it rides - I may be old but I'm not ready to drive with a hat on or stop taking corners on 3 wheels.

I think if agree on the mk2 being a better driver. It's heavier, and put together better I'd say. The JOM coilovers are pretty stiff, especially that I'm sitting on bump stops. However on the fwy it's pretty great. But with all seriousness, in your situation, I'd most likely stay with the mk2 and go standard struts with lowered springs Paul.

                      Car looks sweet!

I have a 1980 mk1 Rabbit import too, I bought it from QLD and I am trying to register it in SA. I took it for an inspection and it has no compliance plate! I was wondering if yours has one and where is it located on the car?
