  • could it be that?
i know i had a similiar problem on a different car when the IAC valve went bonkers. would almost stall coming to a stop.

    might just need adjustment.

ill have a play with it, it does need a tune but..

Car is currently off the road, need to find out where the oil leak is coming from and why the car is running 120 degrees...
But no really, I like to look distinguished when I step out of the car. People are like, "wonder what he does for living."

I had fixed half the broken crap but that just meant it was still halfway inoperable

      • Ok them, question.

What could be causing the constant highs of 110-125 degrees? the coolant is full and theres no leaks.
Would having a fuse thats only half of whats meant to be there cause the fan to stop working? Because the fan was working with that fuse for a while.

        Cheers.

No. Maybe cheek the fan if it's actually working by running a couple of wires to it and connect it directly to the battery. If it does work the switch might be faulty and you could have a sticking thermostat if it's really running hot?

Might also pay to run a external temp gauge.

          • You've modified the motor so it's now a 1.8. If you're running the original radiator it probably isn't good enough for the extra heat generated by the engine.

              • have you re-jetted it?
is it possible, that now it's a 1.8l,it maybe its running too lean, that can make them run hotter

I havent rejetted the carb, its still stock standard i just pulled it apart and gave it a clean.

I found one reason for the temperatures. the thermo switch on the radiator was fried, so i ordered a new one off heritage ($31 for a switch is insane..)

                  • That should go a long way to fixing the problem but you really need to make sure the carby is jetted properly or it could lean out which will destroy your pistons.

What colour is the inside of the end of the exhaust pipe? It should be a healthy grey - check other cars to see what shade of grey. If it's too light then it's running lean.

how would i go about rejetting it?

ill have a look at it now, if its running too lean do i screw the mixture screw in clockwise or out counterclockwise?

the mixture screw only affects the idling, you will have to go up some sizes in the main jet. if you can get the jet sizes for a carby version of the 1.8l you can compare with what yours runs and change to suit.

                        • a new fan switch thingo majig (i know the name its just escaping me atm) arrived yesterday, was just too sick to put it in sadly . had a bit of a scare with the golf, thought the clutch destroyed itself but it was only the drive shafts that were loose so that was good.

                            • A few of us got together last night and Pilks brought his MK1 so we swapped drives and Goon and I got to drive this little noisy car. What a blast it was to drive!!! Couldn't wipe the smile off my face and Goon's. He's now more determined than ever to get his MK1 back on the road.

It's seriously rough and needs lots of things tidied up but so much fun and it was surprisingly quick. When this thing is all sorted it's going to be awesome to drive.

Thanks for the drive Pilks. Loved it!

Might have to look at getting into a MK1 again.
