  • build thread :)

    hey guys

well this is my mk1, which after a few months of searching i found for 1500, down to 1000 in rural victoria. with a 9 hour drive to get there from canberra and another 9 back, i just got lazy and got my brother who lives in melbourne to pick it up :L

this is my first car build, that im doing almost entirely myself, its gonna be a struggle being a 16 year old guy with no money and needing money to repair my bike, and the car aswell haha. but lets just go with the flow yeah?

well anyway, its a red 1978 4 door mk1, with hardly any rust apart from the front bumper area, but thats fair easy to fix i believe.

theres not too much wrong with it tbh, but the rear right door is missing a lock button, and the boot will not open, no matter how hard i try, anybody know how to break into it? :L

this is how the front of the car looks so far..

this is after a semi strip, really annoying but, because the carpet is glued on, it stinks, and i can get the rest of the carpet out without removing the dash :L

the interior was in very good nick for a 35 year old car, and with some tlc will hopefully clean up very, very nicely.

this build is basically going to be a complete stripdown and rebuild, with everything either being replaced or rebuilt etc, and its gonna be super fun haha,

I had fixed half the broken crap but that just meant it was still halfway inoperable

Oh yeah, does anybody know how to remove the front panels? I've taken the 4 off from under the bonnet but where are the rest? And how to remove the doors without rounding the Allen hole? Can't seem to do it..

I managed to get mine(doors) undone by, giving them a solid hit with a pin punch and hammer, and spending a few bucks on a good quality allen key that sat really well in there. and the few that really didn't want to let go, i got dad to put some pressure on them and gently tapped around the bolt with the pin punch and hammer again, sounds a bit dodge, but thats how i got them off, and didn't end up stripping any, which I was worried about too.

Good luck with it mate, Keen to see how this goes.

Nice find mate! Keen to see what is in store for this little beast.
oh, and to remove the front panels there are another 3 bolts under the wheel well towards the front of the door, one under the front of the guard which holds on the front lower section (probably where most of the rust is) and finally one along the bottom of the side skirt.
            Good luck Pilks!

Anybody know how I can loosen the boot lock? Or open it from the inside?

It did start and drive, but my brother had to drive it up from Melbourne and burnt out a valve, so engine rebuild is on the way

Plans are too paint it, slam it on some coils, and stick some nice wheels etc on it hit some shows up and all that

Can anybody enlighten me on the front panels? I've removed the bolts from the left panel, and the front is swinging but the back section won't budge. The right panel is also wierd, there's a really wierd device thingo blocking the top bolt that I need to get to, any advice?

                          That's a shame!!
Hope to see some picks as you progress

About the front panels to start off I'd take the front wheels off which will make it easier to work and then look inside the back of the guard where it wont budge and you would see a few bolts (3 bolts from memory) they might be covered in sealant if I'm not wrong, which will be a challange to see!
                          Give that ago!

I've removed all of the bolts and stuff, but the rear part of the panel still won't move, I think there's a lot of sealant keeping it there, and I've bent the panel already trying to get it out :l I've tried heating it up and all that, still won't budge
