  • Project - "with bated breath"

Well, after what is a number of years now looking, I finally found my first MK1.

Picked it up yesterday in Canberra (No rust here!) for an awesome price with plently of rego left!

    Pictures;

It's a 1.6L, I think it's a 76 but truth be told I'm yet to check! Body is straight. Pretty much no rust at all!

Plans are use it mainly as my daily and get cracking on the body work, respray in an almost identical colour but a little brighter as it's faded and has some light surface rust around the place. I want to re-do the whole interior as it's terribad keeping it OEM though. Window/windscreen seals, actually most seals are pretty average, looking at replacing those. Would love it if someone can point me in the right direction for these!!

Today I changed the oil/filter, cleaned the old coolant out 6 times and it's still dirty.. lol.

Fixed the accelerator cable/pin on the inside of the car, which was kinda slack and looked like it was about to fall off. Engine had idle issues it would constantly stall which turned out to be wiring to the solenoid fixed that then then the fuse blew ha.

Car runs beautifully now.. although it's dirty, like really, really dirty. I doubt it has seen any serious road for years & years let alone some water and a scrub, which will be happening tomorrow.. Hopefully it doesn't fall apart!! Will pick up some new wheels tomorrow too with any luck, and a bunch more other stuff..

Thanks guys let me know what you think! Cheers!

Didn't pass inspection to get it into my name today, gotta fix an oil leak from the cam(I think)..

Pulling cover off and checking where it's coming from tonight hopefully i can seal it with gasket grease, just needs t pass and ill start ordering parts. Also gave her a hit with a hose and sponge today.. still seems dirty lol.

Can confirm it's a 76 LS too. Most people have said I'm crazy buying such an old car, few mates are in love though and totally understand so it's comforting knowing I'm not completely bonkers!!

So bodywork, paint which I'l most probably be keeping the same colour I imagine the OEM colour looked much better 30 something years ago haha, coilovers, lots of odds and ends to be ordered and some fresh wheels which I'm still yet to find all this is on the cards VERY SOON!! Just need somewhere to do the body work >.<

          Cheers

Gave her a decent cut and polish over the long weekend, have taken all the rubbers off and cleaned them and all the grim that was inside, behind, around, through.. just basically everywhere! She's looking a bit more decent now! Did a few hundred kilometres to and from the coast up the Clyde mountain over the weekend, preformed really well not a single problem all weekend.

I'm about to start preping for a respray, going to be keeping it the original colour (CLR 719). Will probably have it ready for paint in a month or 2 but I'm going to take my time as I'll need warmer weather to paint for obvious reasons.

I went and saw Nick from "Volksparts" yesterday about getting a 5 speed gearbox and a bunch of other bit and pieces for her, I really didn't know what to expect when I went out to the farm property of his. OMFG, there is atleast 60+ Mk1 Golfs and hundreds of other VWs there.. Was so in awe that I forgot to take a picture. Unbelievable!! I'm currently compiling my list of things I need before the weekend and hopefully be able to get most of it locally from him, and won't need to order everything online.

Got some coilover suspension, MX5 wheels, a heap of engine bits and bobs all new steering and suspension rubbers which are all on the way.. I'll be sure to take pictures when everything arrives! Now I'm going to try and not spend any more money till I get the paint finished!

            Cheers

Small world huh! You'll definitely see me around as I'm doing most of the work on this car around the corner from supercheapauto at a mates place.

Received my first order of gear only a small one from Amazon, new leads, plugs, filters and all the rubber mounts and **** that I'll ever need, should keep her purring till I get a 2.0L mk3 engine to chuck in which should hopefully happen very soon!

Sad times ahead for my bank account!

Yeah I live just up the hill from supercheaps.

Also did you get the car from a place in Mitchell? I forget the name of the place, A&R or something?

Nah, it's a funny story actually. This old bloke had an ad on allclassifieds last year and I went and looked at it and by the time I um'd and arr'd someone had already bought it, then it came up again almost exactly a year later by a younger guy who bought it and never got around to doing anything on it. So I snapped it up straight away this time

Looking at a mk3 Golf doner car(bab) with a 2.0 in it tonight and fitting my coilovers. Starting to strip the interior and restore it all too.. Good times!

Cool man, I really don't want to completely wreak a working and registered car, but I kinda want the parts lol.. Depends what the body is like if I'll buy it for parts or for me or a mate to drive haha.

I'd be interested in that engine for sure, if this falls through. What does it have with it? Thanks!

                          Cheers
