Quick update, as I've finally had a chance to spend some time with the little car.. All my VW love has been going into my other VW! Done a lot of kilometers in the recent months!

      Back to work now!
So I've got 99% of the body ready for top coat. I've done 5 coats or more.. of etch/primer/filler it and sanded 2-3 times, the whole body looks and feels like candy! I am pleased with myself so far.. These photos are probably not in exact order but it still tells the story.

More pictures below, wouldn't let me attach more then 5 directly.

I've got all my plans in action now that the weather has improved, I hope to have her back on the road by Christmas, with any luck..

Got a new compressor albeit as old as me, but it's a massive belt driven beast!! So that's helped a lot with the spraying. Still haven't decided or purchased top coat colour yet.. Tossing up between original yellow or a brighter yellow or a really bright white. Going to be colour matched off a VW OEM colour of course.

Question, I'm not sure what to do with the current brake lines running through the cabin?? I'd like to remove them and install something new such as braided lined, or even run new copper lines..

And I'm tempted to remove a few bits and pieces in the engine bay as I probably won't ever use them once it's back on the road, although I wouldn't want to upset anyone when it comes to inspection time.

Any thoughts here are appreciated I'm a little clueless as I'm doing all this for the first time and by myself mostly, cheers.

It's pretty straight forward to run in new brake line. You can just buy the tube by the metre from a brake specialist.

It does need a special tool to flare the ends of the pipe though.

It's not usual to run braided line the length of the car. The solid pipe performs better.

Braided lines expand less than rubber ones but steel bundy tube doesn't expand at all.

Annoying thing is working / moving around with the steel lines in place and I can't figure out a way to remove them without kinking and damaging the damn things. What's the best solution iyo? I find it strange that the lines are even inside the cab to begin with..

I'd just rip 'em out and put in new ones but that's because I have the parts, tools and skills to do so.

You might be able to remove and refit your old lines if you're gentle and keep any bending to the biggest radius possible.

Rusty lines could be an issue.

You can remove the lines without bending them rearward - as in feed it out the hole where it passes through the body under where the back seat is.

You can buy a brake line kit on ebay UK with line, nuts and flaring tool for a pretty good price.

Cool thanks guys, the lines are in very good condition at present, no rust here. So I wish to preserve them, I've got enough things to spend my money on as-is!! #1 priority currently is getting it painted and back on the road, I can do brake upgrades and things once it's rolling again.

Do love that colour too sports racer! And that shot is just spectacular..

New wheels for my van! :O

Looking into flaring kits and such, doesn't seem too hard or expensive.. Will definitely look at tiding up and upgrading at a later date.

                      Cheers

Just remember, the lines are waaaay easier to remove while the car is stripped like it is now, and also, rust can be on the inside of the brake lines just as easily (if not more so) as the outside, because brake fluid absorbs water and it will corrode ferrous metal (steel), particularly if the car has been sitting, apart, or not driven, for a long time.

not trying to scare you into spending money, just FYI

                        The body looks beautiful.

Decided on R902 - Grauweiss, as my colour. Laid down 1 light coat over panels and some of the body, funny thing with top coat. I can see tiny little imperfections now, even though I though the primer was perfect on almost everything. So a bit more body work and sanding etc..

It has been a massive journey so far, and I've still got a long way to go honestly. It feels good to starting seeing my parts and work coming together.

Will post up more pictures, once I take them! With something besides my smashed up iPhone!

                            Nice work!

it's good that you picked up on the imperfections now, rather than after it was all sprayed!

any more progress? looks amazing so far, top notch bodywork it looks like

wish i put that much time into prepping mine, oh the joys of seeing sanding marks in your paint.
But no really, I like to look distinguished when I step out of the car. People are like, "wonder what he does for living."
I just reply, "your daughter, sir." - some dude on stanceworks

I had fixed half the broken crap but that just meant it was still halfway inoperable
