Absolutely loving this thread. Great job so far Scotty. Your DIY skills are amazing. I'm in Brisbane and planning to get a Mk1 sometime this year for a project similar to yours.
You're a funny guy Jarred There isn't enough hours in the day, or maybe I should wake up earlier haha.
Thanks MeeM, I've found the golf fairly easy to work on so far. There is so much you can do with them also. My build isn't nearly as extensive as some and it's all happening in my front yard with a very little budget. I've caught the bug now so I'd recommend it to anyone
On with the update:
Decided I needed to clear up some room in my 'work shop' so I can strip the rest of the car and paint it. The engine crane is taking up most of the room so this has to be first.
I cleaned all the engine mounts and gave them a paint. It was only done with a spray can but it didn't come up to bad.
Before I could put the engine back in it needed to be cleaned extensively. The gearbox was smeared in oil so I figured it would be easier to clean if I separated it from the engine.
So ugly...
I gave it a good degrease and painted it. I used 3M engine enamel. I've never tried this stuff before so I'm hoping for the best. Worst case I guess will be lots of smoke for the first 200KM haha. Came up nice...
I took the opportunity to inspect my clutch while the gearbox was off. I knew the clutch installed was an after-market item just from the pedal feel. Didn't really want to see what I did when it came off though.
Yup, A solid center brass button. Usually I'd be happy to have such a clutch but I swear one of my calf muscles is already bigger than the other from having one in my drift car haha. Being my daily driver this isn't the best option especially in traffic. It still had plenty of meat and no scorch marks, so with no reason to replace it and a big sigh I bolted it back on.
Next I gave my block the same treatment as the gearbox. A nice clean and paint with the same 3M engine enamel. No more oil residue woohooo. I'm going to do the rocker cover separately so It stayed un-touched for now.
P.S Does anybody know what the hell those 4 bolts are where the head meets the block?
Then came the time for it to meet it's refurbished home. It went back in without destroying my new paint too. The lack of rain tray made this job so much easier.
So fresh and so clean... Apart from the rocker cover I'm not embarrassed to look at it anymore
I still need to add all the extras onto it. The intake manifold still needs to be made also.
The guards haven't been finished yet either, I'm procrastinating realllllly badly on those as I hate sanding.. I'll just blame the bad weather hehe.
The next few days will probably be finishing off all the little engine parts and then stripping interior, rear doors etc. Nothing to exciting.
Scotty, where did you get your engine crane from, and at what cost, if I may ask? I am looking to buy one for my install (when I get down to doing it) and the cheapest I can find is a $250 one off eBay, which can carry a 1 tonne load. I don't want to hire because I don't know how long I'll need it for.

Really? That sounds great
I haven't got the Mk1 yet ... I'm hoping to get my hands on one in a few months time, just busy with summer semester exams at the moment. Once I get the car and the new engine, I'll contact you regarding the crane. Thanks for your help.
Henry, after the degrease I just went over the box roughly with coarse sand paper. That was pretty much it.
Engine crane came from Supercheap Auto MeeM, It was around $350 if I remember correctly. eBay has some cheaper ones like you suggested but just watch the postage as they are heavy suckers..
No real update unfortunately guys, I'll post up a couple pictures to keep it rolling though
The drive shafts were restored and don't look half bad.
I haven't rectified my brake issue yet as described in earlier posts, but this will no doubt help the stopping.
R32 Skyline brake booster, pretty much a straight swap. I'll be running the master cylinder also.
