Taking it back that far I'm hoping you'll have some wicked plans for paint. Can't wait...

Or you could just leave it in etch

Flat black is awesome. I never do anything without a can of it handy.

Problem with paint is that I can't decide on a colour. :/ Although, etch does look pretty cool.

nice progress on this thread, I like it.

For a mk1, just about any 1.9D block will work for you. Thats AAZ (rare as hens teeth, 1.9 indirect injection turbo) 1Z (TDI) and 1Y SDI (direct injection non-turbo). Any of these will get you the results you desire with a little work.

I have AAZ in my mk3 (its a rare personal import car) and at the moment its making 110hp at the wheels, stock is 74hp at the fly. The Direct injection models have more potential for low down torque. For the mk1, you'll likely find the easiest route will be if you do end up with a direct injection diesel, to get an M-TDI injector pump so you have minimal wiring to do (glow plugs and 12V just like the standard car) rather than having the complication and headache on trying to install a later model ECU. All of the 1.9's, even the 1y, will take a turbo without a hassle, but some oil cooling is a good idea.

Bottom line is that unless you have a specific plan in mind, you'll get good results with any of the 1.9 diesels. The really nice part about it is that you have it in a mk1, which has 2 benefits - its lightweight, and there much more room in the engine bay to fit larger turbo's than in the mk2 and mk3 cars.

as for colour - I really like mk1's in RED at the moment.

Thanks for the reply gldgti. Would you happen to know how hard the 1Y is to find? I doubt it would have as much go as the 1Z.

Hard thing is that Mk1s seem to look good in nearly every colour.
              Thanks again!

My little list of colours I'd paint my car in no particular order:

'Mountain Green' - or other pale/retro green.
'Atlas White' - found on very early MK1's ('75 only iirc), mostly in europe. It's totally creamy.
'Mars Red' - or any classic bright red colour.

It would take me a while to choose between those. I don't expect you'd paint your car in any of them because i like weird ****.

None of those are weird though,

I have a Mars red shell in shed, a Green one out back, and a Orange one behind shed... i think they are pretty "out there" colours

Atlas White is Porn though, Would love a white golf with the black stripes and trim...

And damn those are some chunky tyres

                          Weird is good, sometimes.

Riyard Yellow and Cashmere White is at the moment my colour line up, and I think might add Atlas White to the list now. Very cool colour.

both the 1Z and 1Y are mk3 golf engines. As a standard engine, the 1Z is turbo and the 1Y is not, but internally there are only academic differences, and in my eyes, either one is a good choice because if you were to use one of them, you would likely be using an M-TDI injector pump, and so the power potential is the same for both.

I think Golf Loon has a 1Y or two for sale. These engines are common in the UK (which is where a lot of Golf Loons exotic parts come from).
