Very jealous, a MK1 diesel is ultimate in my books
Where in the Wide Bay are you?
I live in Hervey Bay and own what must be the only MK2 Golf for atleast 200km in any direction.
Is idea of using flocking in the dash for sound deadning purposes?

I didn't quite expain my flocking question right. There is this type of paint that has fabric fibres, they use it a lot in England mainly on Dashes, Card cards ect, ect. I didn't explain it very well, but maybe this will give you an idea?

Thought I would do some sort of update.
I got the cylinder head checked out and its cracked? Anyway, it is no good so I have to decide on whether or not to just buy a new cylinder head or get another engine. I would prefer to buy the new cylinder head and keep it original, but from what I have been told the diesels are quite slow.
How easy is it to find a 1.6 ltre Turbo Diesel engine from a later model golf?
And, how easy is it to fit a bigger engine into the Mk1's?
One half of the paint off the car has been stripped off, still have to do the other side.
        Sorry, no pictures.

there's plenty of info about later model (petrol) engine swaps in mk 1's in this section, so have a look around and do some research. Most of your questions have probably already been answered.

unfortunately, not too many 1.6D's let alone 1.6TD's floating around, since we never got a model delivered here that had that engine as standard. All would have been private imports, but there still might be a few bits floating around here and there!

oh and yes, 1.5D's are reasonably slow. Good enough to get around in. But don't even think of having friends that need lifts or being anywhere in a hurry!

contact GolfLoon he's brought in a few 1.9D's/TD's. I reckon that would be a killer set up in a mk 1! plenty of power (and torque) and silly good fuel economy!

                Hey mate,
Where is the head cracked? Post pic please! Its normal for cracks between the inlet and exhaust valve seats, they are just fine for a good while (couple of hundred thousand k's) until they get really big.

A 1.9 is a good option if you can afford it, its a long term solution indeed, but if you just want to slap on the head and run it, the cracks might be fine.

No idea. Dad sent it off to someone to look at, and all I heard back was that it was cracked and no good. No idea where, sorry I'm not much help...though I will get on to it.

I have actually been quite lazy and it has been raining here every weekend here for a while, not really good weather to strip paint off in. ): A few weekends ago I stripped the doors, taking the door cards off, window out, ect. Then put the passenger door on from the parts car. But thats about it.
We went and had a look at a Mk3 1.9 TDI, we were thinking about transferring the engine, interior, and anything else into the Mk1. He wants quite a lot for it, but it needs a new automatic gearbox so I doubt anyone will buy it anytime soon, but we will have to wait and see. It would be nice though.

                        An update -

The whole car is nearly fully stripped, and been treated. Found a few bits of unwanted rust, well, actually a lot. We took the scuttle panel out as there was a lot of rust a long there, I say there is plans to replace the metal. Same with the floor and most likely the rear panels. The roof has a few spots here and there, but nothing too bad.

                        Anyway, pictures:

Opened up the piller to treat the rust.

                        ):

                        )):

Thankyou! Though the angry grinder action is credit to my Dad, angry, angry man. I am happy about the rust though, I was expecting a little more then that, and dents are to the minimum too. Still hoping to be able to find a 1.9 TD engine, but good things come to those who wait.
