Yeah i didn't realise how much it weighed until i had to take it all out. The sub is about 15kg, the box is another 10-15kg and the amps are about 5kg each. I'm kindo rethinking the whole 8 speaker thing, it will require another amp and a second battery which weighs about 20kg.
I'm not really interested in making it fly, i always joke around saying the bigger motor is only there to drive the alternator.
Agreed. Sometimes, paying more for a brand name product will net you nothing more than an ordinary product, the satisfaction that you own the brand name product, and a much lighter wallet. (Not a blanket rule though, and this can become a very heated debate, so I'll leave it there!)
Love your Mk1 so far, it's looking real neat. Any plans to get quad headlights?
No plans to go quad headlights, I don't like how they look with small chrome bumpers and its more of a GTI thing.
With the thing about the brands, i know its not always the case but it is happening more and more. Brands build their name up with great products and then once they got mainstream they chop their quality and relie on the brand name to sell their stuff. Such is the case with Alpine. Once upon a time all Alpine gear used to be ace, now days you don't get good Alpine for less than $1000 a set. It pisses me off.
Im not saying the jaycar amps and speakers are the best but the brand is unknown to most so you dont pay the premium for it and for what you pay you would be lucky to find something with a brand name on it with the same quality for less then double the price.
Oh and the timing is off, i know this because the car keeps running and then spits out petrol when you turn it off I wish i was an engine guy.
Got new goo today and goo-ed it up all over the carbie (lol), i dont think its leaking any more or if it is its a lot less. Timing is off very badly though. Drove it and found first gear this time, it ****en hammers! Despite the timing being off and it spluttering out at 4.5k rpm it really pulls hard. Couldn't find 2nd so threw it in 3rd and i was really surprised how it just kept pulling. Its not a monster but its a lot quicker then i thought it would be.
Fantastic.......more problems. I don't think its going to be ready for DOVW.
Drove it today to get a full tank of petrol and inflate the tires and found out that the clutch is slipping and after the short trip there was smoke coming from the timing hole in the gearbox. Timing is off very badly know and i still cant get it to idle. I don't know if the gearbox thing is because it was sitting around for so long and its breaking back in or if its ****ed and needs a new clutch or something. I have a clutch kicking back in the garage if it is the clutch that needs replacing. Another issue is the starter motor, when it gets hot it will do half a turn and stop, so that needs to be replaced too. Its never ending damn it!
Got the leads and installed them, that seemed to have solved the idle problem. Haven't driven it though so I dunno if it solved the spluttering problem.
I also ran the 0awg cable, nice and neat although i didn't make a new hole for it in the firewall but meh.
I raised it up a bit and put regular wheels and tires on so i can take it to vic roads and get the engine number changed. Without wheel gap normal wheels look prity good on it and it rides really well, im considering keeping it that way for daily use.
The new re-skin, suede and about an inch of furniture foam under that. Looks A LOT better and cleaner in person, it looks almost like a big cushion and it feel awesome to touch. Dad did most of the upholstering due to my impatiences. With the amps mounted on it weighs exactly 40kg. Hoping to get a touch closer to 140db with the bigger alt, new D-class 4channel amp (sucks less juice), 0guage and dynamat.
Dude that sub box looks awesome. I never thought of using suede on the boxes that I've helped to install in the past - we only used carpet. That's a real neat look.
